I'm with everyone who saying comparing the epl games that play through the night to the Phoenix who play on a sunday arvo (usually) is a bit of a copout from sky.
Just like fellet saying the breakers finals rating (on a friday night) is higher than all games in the NBA finals (weekdays at 1pm). of course it's going to be people have to go to work to pay their sky subscription. and basketball isn't exactly a game you watch a full replay/ recording of, you just catch the comprehensive highlights on sportscenter or nba.com
Not sure why he's even talking about the NBA cause he doesn't directly by those rights cause it's on espn, and then he's too cheap to even get espn 2.

well if premierleaguepass get enough subscribers then maybe they will go after the A-league as well, they seem to be indicating the Italian, French and US are within grasp. So after the current a league contract is done who knows.

One key difference is the A-league games in NZ are filmed by Sky under the current arrangement. There are other options but if everything else is the same FFA would have to subcontract to someone different here which may cost more.

Unfortunately (and as evidence of how monopolistic Sky have become) they bought out OSB (semi independent outside broadcast trucks) and now own all the technology and pay the crews. So for local content at least there is no way anyone could compete. Before Sky purchased OSB there may have been a small opportunity for someone to buy the rights then contract OSB to film it etc (although that still would have been difficult because of how close OSB and Sky were anyway).

unless it can be controlled wholly by a remote and on the TV easily she won't use it.

It is a bit sad that we seem to be heading towards a pay per sport environment, which makes things more complex to manage, and probably more expensive in the long run. Sky is reasonable value considering how many sports they have. If they were each broken down into a pay per sport online channel, I suspect people would be paying a lot more. Plus you alo get all the other channels sky have, which keeps other family members happy, and helps to justify the cost. I wonder how many people will pay the $25 per day price. Maybe for a final...

If they do obtain the A-League then you will see it die in NZ, No one is paying a high subscription to watch them. They would need create a bundle that includes everything.

I have to agree with your regarding the day price. $25 a day is just too much, why don't they have a pay-per-game system where you can watch the game live or ondemand for something more reasonable, say $7-$10.

OK, so if you use the lot it is a cheap bundle.

But if you only want to watch one thing, say the EPL for example, it is incredibly expensive.

If you pay for a 60 GB a month broadband connection and only send emails that is expensive. If you stream video and music rather than buying it then it is cheap.

I think the salient point is that with a Sky subscription for say $102 (for Basic, Sport and Movies) a month you can watch what Sky puts on. With an internet connection costing say $60 you could .... (yeah, that's the point you could do anything) and still have money to buy the sports you want.

It isn't about the cost, it is about the choice.

But now we have no more choice than we had with Sky before. There is still a single provider but it will now cost ME more money to get the same products that I had before, this is my objection.

My family uses all the facilities Sky offers and therefore it had a certain value to us. With the EPL elsewhere, Sky still has the same value except I now have to pay more for the same products by using two PPV providers. Choice would have been having Sky and this provider competing so I could still get my 1080i 9mbps feed over DVB-S2 and other people could get it at 3mbps over the internet.

Yes, we do. We can choose to get Sky and watch a bunch of sport or we can choose to watch the EPL on a different platform. That's choice.

it will now cost ME more money to get the same products that I had before, this is my objection.

No, it will cost (possibly more) to get a different product. It will cost other people less as they only want EPL. That's the thing about choice. I get that you don't want to pay more, neither did Sky.

Sky still has the same value

No, it has less value. They are currently charging the same and it will be interesting to see if that lasts, I doubt it, but the value is what you put on it.

I now have to pay more for the same products by using two PPV providers.

No, you can choose to pay as many providers as you want and as above the products are different.

Choice would have been having Sky and this provider competing so I could still get my 1080i 9mbps feed over DVB-S2 and other people could get it at 3mbps over the internet.

They did compete, Sky lost. You are describing Utopia where we get all the sports in 1080p for free, live and on demand, with a zero rated internet service, the All Blacks always win the RWC/ Tri Nations and Liverpool wins the League, FA and Champions League.

If you find it please give me directions.

Just to prefix this I am not a EPL (or any soccer) fan and don't have Sky Sports.  But I did watch NFL Live on a PC which was good.

If you want to watch EPL on your big TV then it's not going to be easy for the technology challenged. I read they are offering access for tablets (presumably that means an IOS and Android app) but to watch on the TV you are going to need to either use a HDMI connection from your Android tablet and for an iPad, no idea.

I wonder how many sports fans (I bet the intersection of EPL fans and technology literate viewers is not that large) will be disenchanted by how hard it is to watch and just give up?

Ellwood,

It was interesting, he used the divide the cost by everything argument to say it costs 50cents a game, like anyone is going to watch all 380 games.

He also said that he only watches the net in 1.6mbs mode which I take to mean he doesn't care if the punters don't always get a HD signal.

And the best bit was the now everyone can get the EPL which along with the comment about keeping the EPL happy means the 1 game a week on TVNZ is just a PR stunt.

crackdbycraku,

Real choice is having SKY with terrestrial rights and Colessium with online rights and users getting the choice between a full online bells and whistles package with Colessium and thus ditch SKY if EPL is all they want or watch the only game they might want to watch on SKY + SKY's other packages.
