being a netflix user i personally havent signed up, but i recommended my friend try it out and she has (21 day free trial == win, great way to check it out).

my initial thoughts on the ps3 experience

1. had not issue installing/setting up (onscreen keyboard could use some work though, not sure why they cant just use the builtin ps3 keyboard)
2. GUI seems super low resolution, posters were hard to see in the smaller 8x2 grid, had to change view to only show 4 movies at a time
3. needs to add a "queue", wanted to add a few items to watch later but couldnt
4. watched "The Philadelphia Experiment (1984)", appeared to be a 4:3 ideo that was stretched to 16:9... quality was about dvd quality, acceptable but would like 720p on PS3 (actually on every device include PC/MAC)
5. Ordering of titles were off, sometimes the sequels appeared before the original or sequels out of order, also should ignore "the" when orderring the titles
6. some posters didnt show up and resulted in a "cross" not found image, suggesting it might be a html based interface running in the ps3 browser. could be completely wrong on that one.

what i would like
1. implement a queue with recommendations, they should look at the netflix experience and steal from them
2. increase resolution of GUI
3. use native on screen keyboard

but as it stands, the ps3 is very usable and works, i'd hope they would implement a xbox app then other tv apps (LG, samsung etc) then improve on the PS3 app. like i said it works, not perfect, but good enough for now, more important to focus on other devices.

the catalog
1. needs more family/children movies, only saw a handful in there
2. needs some more classic movies, old movies that are just awesome to watch to fill out their catalog. but they had some gold in here, ghostbusters 1+2, karate kid etc
3. add some music dvds to their catalog, some live concerts etc

but as a whole i would recommend this to others, and im sure they will be happy with it and the catalog will improve provided people actually support it. its only $10 a month, thats a combo at wendys.

ronw: I cannot see Quickflix anywhere in the Market so maybe it is blocked from New Zealand at this stage
old3eyes: I see on the Android apps store there is a Quickflix app. Anyone with a NZ account tried it??

I downloaded it but without having an account it looks more like the DVD rental app

I just did a search for quickflix and it turned up top of the list..

Yes but have a closer look at you will see that not only is it not an app but rather "just a link to the mobile site" but it is for the australian site not the NZ one. Furthermore quickflix NZ does not even have a mobile site as of yet, at least not one that I can find.

I just got an email from them, because I tried to sign up for the trial using the code supplied here on Geekzone but stopped when it asked for credit card details, that says they are doing free movies and TV shows until midnight SUnday 8th April and no credit card details required. :)

They do not charge you other than a cent to make sure your card is legitimate which gets refunded.

Yea that's great except I don't have a credit card.
May get one if Quickflix looks good after using it for the week.

Make sure you use the link in the email to login. You won't need a credit card number, but you just need to click the over 18 button again.

PS3 App is pretty decent (low res is noticeable though).

With a bit of work they could have a really slick looking UI, hopefully they do get on to this.

Good to see this service finally available here in NZ, I'll keep an eye on the offerings but its unlikely I'll subscribe until there are full-HD new releases available within a monthly subscription package. I'd even pay per view for full-HD new releases.

I understand its probably distribution rights and studio contracts stopping this, and that is still the root cause of the problem.

There is still no competition between piracy and legal means with regards to streaming Movies and TV, take the dollar price out of the equation there is still absolutely no contest, the industry are still their own worst enemy. You get a FAR better quality product and the process is FAR more seamless via piracy.

Quickflix is a step in the right direction though, definitely, I'll be keeping a close eye on it.

For those who don't like watching movies on a computer screen, and who use a Mac, and who have an Apple TV, try AirParrot for US$10. This will stream your movie onto your TV screen. There are probably other solutions are well.

Like most of these services it needs RSS for new additions. Twitter and Facebook are just not up to it.

The bulk of the open selection (so far) is unavoidable stuff, done to death already on prime time TV.

The remainder is b grade.

I expected the PPV's to be new release like they claim - but they are already old news in the video store.

Signed up for a trial, but unless they add some good quality stuff at the long tail, they won't keep me.

Looking at the selection so far - I can't see them offering TV series which have not screened here, at all.

It is good value and there is enough here to keep teenagers happy for a while but that is all so far.

I counted 373 movies on Quickflix. A bit on the light side, but I'll subscribe until I get bored watching. Last time I counted on iTunes, there were at least 2000 movies available on the NZ mirrored site.

One niche that Quickflix could capture is foreign films. Apple doesn't do this genre particularly well on iTunes, and it cost a lot more to subscribe to the Rialto channel (on top of the Sky basic subscription) to watch foreign films. I suppose there is always Fatso, but that's so last millennium.

I just had a browse.

It is not so much that the content is bad but just that there isn't enough of it.

10 TV series, three of which are Black Adder and one of which is Faulty Towers?

Its not that it isn't new stuff either, I get that Game of Thrones is asking a lot.

But why only Dr Who Season One? What am I supposed to do after I watch that? If they had the full set I would probably sign up just for that.

Movies is the same, what they have is fine but I expect it to be like the local video store, is that asking too much?

Sad, I was really excited by this service. Guess it is now Wait and See.

Didn't anybody tell you I was a hacker?

I've signed up, cost me $18.50 (didn't see the promo code til after)
Im using it through the PS3 (they must have login probs sorted...I have no issues as of today)
The stream is SD, but I think HD if you use a Bravia.
Kids are watching Johnny English, movies appear to be about 800mb or thereabouts.
Quality is acceptable on a newish Panasonic 50" plasma. Also, no stuttering or buffering on my very average connection.

If the movie database is expanded, and I can purchase new release by pay per view then I see no reason for trips to the DVD store anymore...which is good and a bit sad at the same time really.

Like others I'm happy to wait and see what the next few months brings.
