That slingshot service will have deep ramifications so I think more than just SKY, TVNZ and mediaworks will be keeping an eye on it.

Issues that may arise could include:

Probably not in next few years but eventually the ultimate owner of the programme/movie/sports event may introduce worldwide minimum pricing. This could apply to just streaming or everything.

The local consumers having their experience downgraded by numbers of users on local hardware with a lot being overseas.

davidcole:
old3eyes: I see Sky is already talking to it's lawyers to see what can be done to block this service.

"Sky TV, Television, New Zealand and MediaWorks owners of TV3 and Four have all been talking with Hollywood studios and say they are "keeping a close watch on developments.

Fellet said he had not yet seen legal opinions from either party."
"close watch" isn't talking to lawyers.

But this part tells me otherwize.

"Sky TV chief executive John Fellet says studio lawyers don't accept that plans for a service which would effectively allow people to circumvent restrictions on buying content from overseas websites are legitimate."
