Crime:
Breaking Bad
Sons of Anarchy
Dexter
Prison Break (first 2 seasons, pretend it ends there)
i (almost) got away with it. (my latest addiction, typical skytv investigation channel type of program, each episode focuses on an actual criminal and what they did)

Drama etc:
House of Cards
Walking Dead

Conventional Comedy:
Freaks & geeks
Orange is the new Black
Weeds

Crude comedies:
The inbetweeners
Blue Mountain State
The league

If i had to pick 3 MUST SEE programs. It would be: Breaking bad, Sons of Anarchy & Freaks & geeks.

sen8or: With a girl/girl shower scene in the first few mins of Orange is the new black s1, I knew I was going to like that one.

Agree with breaking bad, although s1 is a little slow, doesn't start ramping up in pace to mid-late s2, but stick with it.

Am also doing cheers a bit for nostalgia, quite enjoying those.

Warehouse13 has potential, part way through ep1, a little hammy.

Arrow I quite enjoyed. Thought acting was a bit wooden at times but worthwhile watching

Both Orange is the New Black, and Hemlock Grove are well written and have good actors. HG has the hands down best werewolf transformation I have seen.

Warehouse 13 is fun. It gets increasingly more cheesy. The last season has only six episodes which include a few musical numbers. If you don't take it seriously it's a relaxing watch.

Giggs: If you are into crime series then The Killing is worth a look. Unlike many US made crime shows this one actually has some substance. Netflix is currently making season 4 which is to be the last.

EDIT: Season 4 starts streaming on 1 August. There are 6 episodes and in true Netflix fashion all will be available at once.

It's also worth watching the original, Forbrydelsen, and the Bridge. I'm pretty sure you can find them by changing your Netflix region.

Thanks everyone for all the suggestions.

I will I will be looking at House of Cards, The Killing and Walking Dead with great interest, in addition to finishing Bones (that might take half a year at least and by then Season 9 should be on Netflix). I really can't emphasise enough how Netflix makes watching TV a joy, as opposed to an actual chore that even using MySky can become. I want to watch something? Just click and wait seconds and I can have so much at my fingertips. No stuffing around with TV remote, the guide, and recording conflicts etc.

- breaking bad
- inside combat rescue
- surviving the cut (episode 3 relates to combat rescue)

Orange is the New Black is meant to be excellent.

If they have Love/Hate (Irish gangster series) it really is excellent.

I'm not sure what is and isn't on netflix, but other good series are:

The Wire (probably the best TV series ever, full stop)
Fargo (TV homage to the great movie, which should be watched first. But a great series in it's own right, possibly the best TV so far of 2013/14)
Treme (by the maker of The Wire, about New Orleans post Hurricane Katrina, great music as well as great stories.)
The Trip (hilarious double play by Steve Coogan and Rob Brydone playing themselves, quirky humour)
True Detective (movie production values brought to southern gothic police drama, Harrelson and McConaghy excel)
Veep (quirky US political comedy by Armando Ianucci, the Brit creator of The Thick of It)
Borgen (Danish political drama, subtitled)
Happy Valley (British police drama, excellent perfomances, gritty social issues)
Inspector George Gently (British cop drama with Martin Shaw (Bodie, or is it Doyle?) set in the 60s)
Justified (Southern cop drama, home town boy comes home to confront school chum crim, very addictive show)
Les Revenants/The Returned (French scifi (?) about weird returns by people who dies years ago - definitely in the stranger side of plot lines)
Line of Duty (British cop drama)
Outnumbered (Simply hilarious, unless you don't have kids)
Deadwood (The west with swearing and great story arcs)
Green Wing (completely crazy British hospital comedy)

Lots of good shows listed here, definitely +1 nearly all of them (and a few I need to check out).

Of those listed so far can definitely strongly recommend the following that I have seen:

Breaking Bad
Dexter (all but the last season)
Luther
Sherlock
House of Cards
Freaks & Geeks (criminal this show was cut)

Would also add Lilihammer, a Netflix original with Steven Van Sandt (of E-Street band and Sopranos fame). Also really enjoyed Better Of Ted as a light hearted comedy.

It's not on Netflix, but everyone must watch True Detective. That show is amazing.

On Netflix:

- Bates Motel. Incredibly under-rated prequel series to Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho. Dark, brooding and brilliantly acted.
- Revolution. Series 1 of this was fantastic - world loses power and plunges into war and chaos. Series two not so good.
- Fringe. Only just discovered this on Netflix, part way through series 2 and loving it though be prepared to suspend all disbelief to truly enjoy.
- Luther. Perhaps the best police drama ever made. Dirty, gritty, harrowing in places.
- Sherlock. Perhaps the OTHER best police drama ever made. Superb. Do not confuse with 'Elementary' which is really quite bad.

Not on Netflix
- Penny Dreadful. Sumptuously acted and produced. I'd tell you what it's about but I wouldn't do it justice and you'd never give it a look. But trust me it's worth it. Eva Green and Timothy Dalton take the lead in deliciously dark period horror.

While we're on the best crime shows EVA, there is also Broadchurch and Scott and Bailey.

How about some comedy to distract you from all the cooking and stabbing?

US has a great selection of old Nick Cartoons (Ed, Edd n Eddy, Hey Arnold, CatDog etc) as well as modern every day classic's (Family Guy, Futurama, American Dad, Bob's Burgers, Archer, Sponge Bob Square Pants etc). Brooklyn Nine-Nine is also well worth a watch (only 1 season made so far though). Heck even Mighty Morphing Power Rangers is a good laugh.

Or Pop across to Netflix Canada if you want to watch some great shows not available in the US like Stargate SG1 (a great Sci-Fi series - or my personal favourite, Dragons Den Canada, one of the best realty TV series I've watched in a long time).

Second most of the other suggestions though, Breaking Bad (from season 2 on wards) has to be number one on the list.

If your service allows you the option, I suggest switching to Canada and watching 'The Good Wife'
It's currently showing on TV3 but being able to watch it all on Neflix is great, and it's a very good legal drama.

I second suggestions for:
Bates Motel (Also try American Horror Story)
Sons of Anarchy
Breaking Bad
House of Cards (Also try Scandal)

A good quirky drama is the United States of Tara.

some good TV shows mentioned on here but you have missed a few, namely:

-Sopranos - Gandolfini is a genius in this
-Suits - currently in season 4 and fantastic
-Ray Donovan - currently watching this and its a bit Sopranos-lite but good fun
-Game of Thrones - was this missed here? Really????
-Lost
-boardwalk empire

There are enough suggestions here and above to keep you going for about 2 years hahaha.
