A little bit of background behind this request...

Until getting Netflix a couple of months ago, I basically do not watch any TV except for football, the documentary channels on Sky, and the odd bit of BBC and CNN. So whilst I've heard of famous TV series like House, Bones and a few others, I've never ever watched any nor been tempted, mainly because I can't stand being restricted to one episode a week. I think the only complete TV episode of something that I've ever watched from beginning to the end is Band of Brothers. However, since getting Netflix I've been wanting to branch out beyond movies.

Have started from Season 1 of Bones, which I am thoroughly enjoying. Emily Deschanel really does a superb job and having enjoyed the books that the series was loosely based on also helps. I've also enjoyed The Fall (BBC/Northern Ireland crime series featuring Gillian Anderson). With this in mind, which TV series have you enjoyed on Netflix that you'd recommend? Generally speaking, I enjoy crime, thriller and drama types of content. Humour is fine but I prefer subtle/quirkier stuff within a wider context, rather than pure comedy per se.

Your ideas are most appreciated :)

I've really enjoyed Orange is the new black and weeds.  both have the same creator.  slightly quirky, a bit funny, but good solid dramas with good 'anti-hero' style leads.

House of Cards, really came at me from left field never expected to enjoy it but probably one of the best shows in recent years; Kevin Spacey, Robin Wright, and the guy who played Doug Stamper really excelled in this show; really looking to third season :)

Start with Breaking Bad, then you can move onto House of Cards and then Orange is the new black. Should keep you occupied for a while... :D

fair warning both orange is the new black and house of cards contain graphic sex and nudity (more orange is the new black) along with violence.

Can be awkward if you intend watching it with family.

With a girl/girl shower scene in the first few mins of Orange is the new black s1, I knew I was going to like that one.

Agree with breaking bad, although s1 is a little slow, doesn't start ramping up in pace to mid-late s2, but stick with it.

Am also doing cheers a bit for nostalgia, quite enjoying those.

Warehouse13 has potential, part way through ep1, a little hammy.

Arrow I quite enjoyed. Thought acting was a bit wooden at times but worthwhile watching

If you are into crime series then The Killing is worth a look.  Unlike many US made crime shows this one actually has some substance.  Netflix is currently making season 4 which is to be the last.

EDIT:  Season 4 starts streaming on 1 August.  There are 6 episodes and in true Netflix fashion all will be available at once.

Currently watching Orange is the New Black, enjoying it.
Loved House of Cards, can't wait for S3
Enjoyed Luther with Idris Elba

Watched a lot of BBC crime/thrillers (had my Netflix set to UK for a lot of them).
Watched all the QI's they had on there, love QI
Lots more, can't think of them all now, but generally happy to watch what Netflix recommends now (after I watched a few of my own choice it seems to pick things I like).

I'd recommend the OP tries both. While I do appreciate the UK version of The Office, I find the US to be far more accessible and more enjoyable overall.
While the US TV networks do have a track record of taking overseas content and dumbing it down to the point of unwatchability, I think they actually did a pretty good job with The Office.

We've been watching that one. Its OK, but hasn't totally hooked us in yet. It almost feels like "House of Cards Lite".
