I disagree. Lightbox has shown that it is possible to get a workable SVOD service here. While it certainly isn't as good as NetFlix in the content stakes, its far more impressive than I had hoped for. In fact, we're currently watching Suits on Lightbox because it has more recent seasons than NetFlix currently has.

While the difference between Lightbox & NetFlix may grate with those that have already been parallel importing their TV content, I think the vast majority who haven't (after all, it is currently more a geeks domain) will be quite impressed, especially if NetFlix ends up with content similar in quality, variety and quantity to what Lightbox currently offers.

Disagree all you like, Lightbox isn't a real service. It supports only one set top device, and that seems from the FAQ to need an iPad as well. When there's a Roku channel come back to us.

I think I would rather keep receiving the US Netflix as in my experience we usually receive a shoddy product compared to the US. Having recently upgraded to a UHD TV watching SKY NZ with most interesting channels such as Nat Geo or Discovery still being in SD is a good example of this.
Getting Netflix without Global Mode has been problematic to say the least. UnoTelly were good at getting the DNS sorted but paying Netflix was very difficult. I had to resort to a Virtual Credit card before they would take my money.
I am now able to watch USA Netflix on my laptop and stream that to my 65 inch Samsung but it is a hassle as it ties up the laptop and means having to get out of my chair to make changes etc.
Thought I could make the UA65HU9000 work but that is a major hassle getting the Netflix app to come up and when you click on it you get an error message and no Netflix. Plus changing it back to NZ for those NZ only Apps is a big PITA. So I have now gone for the Samsung BD-H6500 BluRay player and hope to just change it to USA and watch Netflix that way. Just hope the Netflix app doesnt give the same error. Apologies for going off topic a bit.

The claim was made that NetFlix would struggle because of lack of content. Lightbox is proof that a competing SVOD service can launch here, with a decent amount of content.

Yes and I disagree it's a "service". It's a niche product. It's in effect no different that the two TV networks TV on demand.

It is definitely a service, and quite a usable one. Our TV viewing for the past couple of weeks has been 40% NetFlix, 40% Lightbox, 10% Sky/FTA. There are kinks to be worked out, and more platform support is sorely needed. But its definitely a promising start in the right direction, and by far the best locally run SVOD service I've used so far.
