surfisup1000: This can only be bad news, there are no benefits to someone who already uses netflix US.

My predictions:::

They may block NZ access to US netflix, possibly simply blocking kiwi credit cards would be enough to cause me issues.
The NZ netflix product will have less content (due to other providers who already have content rights here).
NZ netflix will be more expensive.

In its current state a Netflix account is not tied to any region, so they're certainly not going to start blocking kiwi credit cards, given they're opening the service up to NZ. They would have to change subscriptions to be tied to a particular region, a presumably large-scale change that certainly isn't going to be prompted by adding NZ to the map.

networkn: Well I still find I can't get much in HD let alone 4K via netflix. Things like the Croods movie, which was recently released (Relatively) was in SD no matter what I did. (Yes I have PLENTY of bandwidth).

What are you using to stream? Most tablets won't do HD - those that I am aware are approved by Netflix are the Nexus 7 2013, iPads, Nvidia Shield Portable and Tablet and I think that's about all of them.

I suspect it will only remove those shows/movies that Sky and other local broadcasters have signed exclusive deals for next year and beyond.

The Netflix catalogue (US) is HUGE with may titles I have never seen here, so I doubt they will block those unless Sky has signed for those.
I imagine there will be a few (key) titles that go missing, or we are given early seasons only.

hopefully they put up a good local selection as Netflix seems to do with other countries, and am very keen to try this out :D

Will give Lightbox etc a run for their money certainly

It will be good to see their mobile apps in local app stores to. Such a pain running a U.S. iTunes account just to have the Netflix app.

I'd like to think we'll be able to get the app but still sign in with current U.S. account. That all remains to be seen though.

Hopefully Netflix see a subscription as a subscription regardless of how they receive payment and content is viewed.

We are probably netflix's smallest market and they aren't going to change anything to lock us out of changing to different regions.

Yeah, what's the story here?

I'm happy to switch over to paying for an NZ Netflix service, provided I can retain the use of Getflix to switch to be able to take advantage of the full range on offer across ALL Netflix regions (necessary as the US service has probably one of the weaker selection of movies, and it's inevitable NZ's section will be just a fraction). Is that going to be possible?

I hope (and sort of expect) this will probably be possible, given you can currently do just that in other countries.

Since this is Geekzone... AFAIK Netflix runs entirely on AWS, the closest region is in Australia. Will they use the Sydney region as their primary data centre, or will they set up something in NZ? I wonder if providers will need to provision more bandwidth on the Southern Cross cable to Australia.

Yes, Just like unblock us users in the us being able to change regions we would have to be able to to access both regions.

those are Netflix exlusives in same vein as House of Cards, Orange is the New Black, Lillyhammer etc

I would not think so Trans Tasman bandwidth is pretty cheep these days....
