richms: Open a US paypal account, send money from your NZ one to the US one, then pay from the US one.

Thats the workaround I have to use on the playstation store now since they stopped directly taking my ASB debit or credit cards. My Westpac ones never worked on playstations us store.

any problems opening a US paypal account with a non real address?  Do in need to use a proxy to make my IP US located?

No problem at all. I used my youshop address incase I need to buy something from a merchant that wants to address verify. It keeps nagging to connect a bank account and I put one of my NZ debit cards in which it was happy enough about.

As above, use a YouShop address - or any hotel in Portland, OR - there's no state tax there.

Paypal seems a no go as I get to the point of it needing a debit card (my ANZ Onesmart was not accepted) and I cant link an NZ bank account.

I also tried the onesmart card direct with Netflix but get error"There appears to be a problem with the payment method you are trying to use.".  This having confirmed with ASB the card is active and usable.

PS Paypal just let me wait till later to add the account so looks like that way will work.  Thanks all for your help.

Spoke too soon.  When trying to use the US paypal account Paypal will only process if you enter the debit card info which must have a US address liked to the card.

So a dead end.

Do you have *ANY* balance on your OneSmart? It will try to charge you the first month (and refund it immediately) to confirm it is a valid number.

There, fail.

Put at least $20 in that account.

Thanks.  Have done that but look like it is not real time ASB to Onsmart.  Oh well,  will try tomorrow.

When Netflix comes to nz this entire rigmarole will seem ludicrous. But right now PayPal is all that works for me, when it asks for you SSN just press skip, its a really small hidden button at the bottom of the box.

BNZ Visa works fine for me, It really does depend on your card, but when they launch in NZ it wont be an issue any more anyway

Even when Netflix launches in NZ isn't there still going to be a demand for the full US service rather than a restricted local.  SKY, TVNZ etc has NZ rights on many series and films so they would not be available on Netflix NZ.

You wont need a US account, netflix gives you data based on your IP no matter where your account is based so an NZ account with a US IP (or vpn/dns) gets a US catalouge.

Netflix is actually just "one site" with region filters based on IP geolocation,  the reason given for it working like this is because if you live in europe you can use netflix no matter what country you happen to be in England/Ireland/France etc, of course nz has no borders just oceans so it seems weird its not locked down better from here

IP based is good news. However I wonder if Orcon will switch off global mode once Netflix NZ launches. Then you would be back to needing unotv or similar.

lots of people using global mode for other services - like amazon, bbc, cbs, hulu, hbo, xbox, etc.  I doubt they will switch it off.

I have loaded $20 onto my onesmart.  But this morning Netflix throws "Sorry, we are unable to process your request. Please try again later." for both onesmart and paypal attempts at payment.  Cleared cookies but same result.

I get the feeling Netflix just does not work for new sign ups anymore.
