joker97: just right click on the task bar and select task manager when you are doing your streaming. it should tell you where your bottle neck is.

if CPU is maxxed out even periodically it can cause your problems

if the RAM is over 50-70% it is a problem (which i'm guessing it WILL be given that you only have 2GB ram, but in conjuction with other bottlenecks we can tell the most likely issue)

if your disk activity is high etc

just post back what you see

Thank you so much for the suggestions. This is helping me a lot to focus on diagnosis. I just tried streaming another video and the CPU load never went over %75 max and that only briefly. It averaged around 50-60% RAM usage stayed at a little under 50% and disk activity was almost non-existent, even when the video froze again. Everything seems fine, except it doesn't work!

One thing I haven't tried yet, though it is also on my list, is wi-fi which richms suggests. I will try that tomorrow.

Thanks again for all the help. It really makes a difference.

ok you need to download GPU-z and look at the GPU activity .. if it goes to 100% you know you need to get a video card

that is the only thing left other than lousy ethernet.

an old Intel built in GPU can only do 720p at most, when the conditions are right. it will NOT do 1080i/p. it should to SD 100% fine. 720p depends on the bitrate ...

so maybe you were watching SD before and then moved on to 720p and then watched 1080i - that can explain why it got worse over time

I ran GPU-z this morning, but I'm not sure what I am supposed to be looking for. It describes the processor as 'Rogue' and most of the boxes are blank, unknown, or 0. I don't see an activity box, or anything that displays percentages. I followed the lookup link and there was a description of the GPU. It dates from 2013.

lol "Rogue" GPU? that's your problem!

if it plays SD fine, 720p jittery, 1080i unwatchable, I can pretty much bet that your GPU is the problem, if it is true that task manager shows everything else is not stressed, although it could still be the Ethernet, because SD < 720p < 1080i in terms of bandwidth requirement

Well I finally got around to setting up the wi-fi connection as a last resort. That didn't make any difference either. I'm getting pretty discouraged.

I suspect you are not familiar with the machine that the OP and I have if you are suggesting that as a solution.

Been streaming netflix since my last post, in the windows 8.1 app.

No problems at all. No skips, no dropouts.

I don't know what to think. Something must be wrong but I have no idea what. I haven't tried Netflix but I have tried ABC iview, BBC iplayer and Hulu and I have the same problem with all of them. The streams are simply unwatchable. Yet today I also tried YouTube for the first time, a free film as a test at 360p, the highest resolution setting available, and it worked fine. I have tried to get support from the company I bought the computer from but so far all am I getting is Chinese babble that is just sending me around in circles.

That sounds promising. I haven't seen that tool yet. I will look for it.

Thanks for posting your experiences with the Pipo X7. Was considering this as a cheap WMC player / net streamer

Will follow with interest
