We recently ditched Sky after 10 increasingly expensive years, and changed to Freeview plus NZ Netflix.
It was a good decision - better programs, no commercials (Netflix), and much cheaper.
Netflix does NOT show the latest movies - but we don't care.

EDIT: We sometimes use VPN to view US and Canadian Netflix.

I've also just ditched Sky in favour of Netflix and Hulu Plus - between the two they capture most of the older and newer content, however for new movies you might be better off swapping Hulu for Amazon Instant Video. If I desperately want to see something very new I use either my NZ or US iTunes account to rent or buy it. Otherwise the Netflix and Hulu in conjunction with Freeview and the UK channels via Unotelly have me well covered for everything except sport.

I still dont buy many digital (not the exactly correct word, neither is streaming...) movies due to the fact theres too many stores and no idea what will still be around or the standard in the future. If I do buy a movie, I usually grab a UV code and redeem those.

I really wish google, amazon, itunes supported UV. Also I have no idea what the quality of some of these movies are, some services dont give you enough info, needs to be 1080p and at least 5.1 for me to buy it.

i have Netflix and hardly watch it, i need Sky because i tend to watch ESPN 24/7 and their programs are hard to find elsewhere , and i never watch Rugby but if i watch Sky i only watch sport channels so i would find it really hard to ditch .

Common sense is not as common as you think.

Lightbox does not have any movies.

Netflix has a very varied mix of documentaries, tv shows and movies. The movies are not the latest releases but they occasionally do have a latest release, we recently watched the Boxtrolls on Netflix which is not that old and they currently have Noah on as well.

We have not yet browsed Netflix for a kids movie and not found anything worth a go..

We also have unotelly, which is essentially gives us access to global content, we simply change the DNS of our viewer (ipad/tv/media player etc) to give us access to whichever country we need to be to get the content we want.

I use moreflicks and lemontv

to find stuff I want to watch, it then tells me whether its currently available on Netflix or iTunes or iplayer etc and when you click on the service (ie Netflix) it tells me which country have it on show so that I can adjust unotelly to suit and voila !

if you want latest film releases then you are best to use a streamlining rental service such as Ezyflix, Videoezy, google movies, amazon, iTunes... the list goes on but they all rent movies for around the same price.

The added benefit of being geo-unblocked is that you can find content that is available overseas which has not yet reached the NZ rental market just yet. Although this is becoming less and less with global digital release dates. I never really found this to be such an issue as it just means waiting until "next week" for a movie release..

Its actually relatively simple. And a darn site cheaper than paying for $ky movies..

Thanks very much for your postings, they are very helpful. I guess you have to weigh up whether you would get your money's worth from a regular monthly subscription or whether just hiring an individual movie for say $7 a time would be adequate (or of course going to a theatre for the very latest releases). I suppose you can just cancel Netflix etc if you aren't watching it very much, but most people probably wouldn't bother doing this.

You also have to weigh up the additional cost of getting unlimited broadband data if you don't already have that, and I think we would prefer to see movies etc in HD which would need unlimited data. It's certainly an interesting set of choices and I can see why some people just stick to SKY!

You should go to Unlimited anyway - IMHO 40GB is not enough for normal surfing, even without HD streaming.

Do the maths and it's bonkers how sky can even justify what they charge..

We saved a net $60 per month changing from Sky to Netflix (we were already on unlimited internet).

The only real advantage SKY has now is in live sports in HD quality, especially for the local variants (oval ball shape)

That's the conundrum many find themselves in. You have Sky only to access Sky Sports.

Netflix has most of the ESPN 30 for 30 series, they're brilliant!

I guess the thing you have to decide is if sports is worth $1000 per year (approx) to you. I decided that money could be spent elsewhere.

We recently subscribed to Netflix using Unotelly and now Dns4me and love it - no adds ,watch when you want its great. Use LemonTv for seaching titles. This allowed us to ditch sky movies. We then realised the only thing we have MySky for is Sky Sports - so 2 weeks ago we got rid of that as well. Bought a Panasonic recorder - what a relief to be free of sky after nearly 20 years - please don't add the $ up - I don't want to know!! Thanks to geekzone posts I've been able to follow setup guides and help for netflix, unotelly, dns4me etc - invaluable information - thanks
