I guess my connection speed is not "normal". I'm in an extremely remote location. I say this tough in cheek, as I'm only 5km from the Tauranga urban boundary! but obviously that's too remote for Telecom to provide a cable/fiber connection or Vodafone to provide a wifi connection! They are putting in fiber at the bottom of my road right now, but it wont get to me!

Seems strange - everywhere within Tauranga's boundary (5km out) has at-least ADSL.

When was the last time you tried signing up to Broadband through an ISP like Spark? There has been a tonne of RBI activity around Tauranga lately with many new broadband areas added. You're right - Chorus doesn't however Vodafone RBI covers a vast majority of that road (as in the whole road).

Below is a speedtest I recorded a few mins ago via our RBI connection. You should be able to easily stream video with this sort of speed:

OP, look at the LEGAL STREAM AND DOWNLOAD list in this subforum. If it is not there chances are it is not legal.

If you need to pay for a codec or some kind of unpacker to view the file, then it's definitely dodgy, and probably not even the actual movie - just a way of conning you out of some money. Personally I've never seen a legit service offering movie downloads by torrent.

If you want to go down the geo-unblocking route, Amazon Instant Video offers downloads as well as streaming, and moves are generally under $15US each.

I signed up for Lightbox and Quickflix in Jan and tried them but there was too much buffering. Just signed up for Neon last night and had a quick look at Game of Thrones and the first 5 minutes streamed ok, so will try a full program tonight.

How do you get 24mb/sec when the UBI plan says 5/2??

Interesting about Vodafone coverage up my road, looked at the map app last night, and it wouldnt work with Chrome so had to use IE, and it didnt show my prop as currently covered, but now it does and is working with Chrome as well.

...can only get better!

5/2 is the specified minimum for RBI. When I first connected 3 years ago, that was pretty much what I got, but since then the router has been upgraded 3 times and the cellsite at least 3 times if not 4. With each upgrade, the speeds have got faster and 4G is due within a few weeks, which should push the speeds up even further, especially the upload speed. The speed to local servers now is far faster than I need, but the international speed is nowhere near as fast at peak times in the evening. I did some measurements to LA last night and got about 9Mbps down with 2.5Mbps up. Still pretty good I think.

The only real legal option for downloading movies is something like iTunes (or maybe google play not exactly sure)

All of the rest of the legal services are streaming.

I watched Game of Thones last night streaming on Neon through Chrome browser....lousy picture quality and lots of freezing as it buffered, though no message about buffering.

Thanks for all the feedback, its given me a better understanding of the issues and how to deal with them. I suspect downloading is still me best option until Netsmart upgrades their hardware to improve speed.
