I'm hoping the App Store for it will end up as good as the iPad/iPhone ones.

Surely, if it is running iOS, it won't be a big deal for Plex, TV3, TVNZ, Sky to have Apps ready for it pretty quickly. That will make it potentially a 'killer' box for NZ users who aren't all that technical, and even better for those who are (and want to access overseas apps, like BBC iPlayer, Aus Catchup/Stan etc.)

I hope it isn't too expensive. SOunds like it could be considerably more than the ATV3 was/is.

My position 100%. the only STB you will ever need potentially. If an app exists, its always on iOS.

Cost, I dont care. Normal price was circa NZ$159? If it can do the above, 159, 199, 299, dont care. It would always be relevant for years a a time
Now if it could be a PVR, media player, so much the better buit doubt that

I guess it depends if it's a locked app store (only vendors, like broadcasters) or an open one like the IOS store allowing any developer to write for it.

I'm not sure if it would have the hardware to support tuners like a pvr - but I guess a tuner is pretty small nowadays...but even if it doesn't when you can access a pvr via plex, or directly as HDHomeRuns do via kodi - all these become possibilities.

Not getting my hopes up too much though, this is probably about the 3rd or 4th year of rumours of an app store.

I'd be keen but it'd have to be priced competitively.

If it got all the usual apps that are available on an iPad (i.e. Sky Go and TVNZ/TV3 on demand, I'd be a happy boy.

A full web browser would be nice too.

I've been waiting for it for a while. If it has an open app store then I'd be really delighted. Great potential for games as well as home automation. That would be enough for me to buy it on release.

Edited to add - this quote from 9to5Mac fills me with hope:

"Third-party applications support plus a full Software Development Kit for the Apple TV will be two tentpoles of the new device. This means that developers, just like with the iPhone and iPad, will be able to build apps for the Apple TV. I have tried them all, firetv, chrome cast, apple tv etc

I ended up just getting 1 of those small intel windows PC's from aliexpress (like this) as it does everything

Have plex installed on my main machine and just use the web interface for network movies, the windows apps for hulu and netflix, and websites for tvnz, tv3 etc.

But back to the point in why i am posting, some content contracts are just "funny" by that I mean you might have rights to stream it to iOS (ipad/iphone/android) however not to big screen so that is why airplay/chromecast is disabled in some cases, there are even rules around how many devices a user can have to stream (i am not talking about streaming at the same time) but how many registered devices.

there are various apps. I will be getting the new one. I have had 1,2 and 3.

What are the names of the Android apps??

air remote is one I have, Google is your friend for the others. Personally I use the remote app on iPad

Apple needs to do a few things to make me upgrade my ATVs (2 at home; 1 at work):

Support wifi networks with enterprise level authentication: we cannot use ATV on our work wifi, which buggers up using Airplay
More storage
Faster processor
Ability to add third party channels.

Unless of of these things happen I'll be focused on my Roku, with my Chromecast backfilling for the equivalent of Airplay.

For lightbox, it was the first thing they launched with as a way to get to the big screen other than connecting up an hdmi cable to the tv from your laptop.

Tvnz and media works don't allow it, but then they aren't svod services (the s stands for subscription, and neither mediaworks nor tvnz have any subscription component)

I currently have one that I bought three years ago and hardly ever use it, but if they release a new model that supports 3Now then I would definitely buy it.

We love our atv3, Netflix, YouTube etc. but as a kiwi I love kiwi programming so an App Store in the new atv4 where nz catchup services or even sky go is available would top me right off.

I have been emailing tvnz and tv3 for some time now, and this new atv4 might just do the trick for kiwis.

I Would spend up to $200
