ScuL: Well one thing that is good about having public national broadcast channels is you can actually watch the news in a 20 minute sitting.
I find it absolutely ridiculous that the news gets interrupted with commercials here.

I find it absolutely ridiculous that we have to have a commercial hour.
This is New Zealand - we don't have an hours worth of anything happen in a day.
30 minutes (including sports would wrap up NZ news, the world AND sports.

You are quite correct and at the time the licence fee was canned, Sky subscriptions was used as a strong argument why the licence fee should be canned. Now everybody just likes to bitch and moan about Sky programming quality and the reduction of programme quality via Free to Air. The poor buggers can't win!

Personally, I believe the BEEB leaves just about every other broadcaster for dead and that is generally my first port of call for something interesting to watch - my 10 year old son included. Listening included!

So, is there a valid argument for a licence fee? I think so, because TVNZ is just, well, "bland and non-educational" I guess is a good description.

You are assuming that content like that can only be made and distributed by a broadcaster. 10 years ago yeah, nowdays, nahh.

It still does exist, but just comes out of the taxes instead as money to NZ On Air, which I believe the licensing fee used to go to. I recall receiving a letter from NZ on air with the lincensing fee on it, recall it was a couple of hundred a year. Not sure if they fund programs on Pay TV, although pay tv channel heartland used to reshow a lot of content that was paid for by our licensing fee. A lot of programs on BBC though are rubbishy though. The UK does also have a far larger population to pay. NZs population is about half that of just Londons!

I'm pretty sure the funding they give out is for services on Free to Air TV, I recall NZ On Air cancelled funding for Face TV as soon as the channel was exclusive to SKY only,

Off topic I know and apologies to the OP. But Face TV? Never heard of them. Am I missing anything?

Somehow I doubt it as I am too busy watching Aunty Beeb (to get us back on topic).

I am for a fee, but in the current state of broadcast TV transition I highly doubt it would have the expected return I would want.

With that in mind all most poeple would want is for all our broadcasters to get their a into g and sort their s^&*.

- We want to watch when we want to watch.
- We want apps for all our devices, make the apps for all our devices. No exclusives, that just turns us off.

Ignore that at your peral broadcasters. Any broadcaster that doesn't have the apps will miss out in the end. Content or not if I can't do what I want, when I want, and on whichever device I want then it is your loss not mine.

I would abandon this HBB tv thing as well. What I have used of it has proven it to be a laggy non responsive, only plays the ads ok piece of junk.

It used to be Triangle TV / Stratos channel, rebranded as Face TV. Placed way on the end of the SKY channel numbering. :-)

While we're talking about iplayer, I highly recommend The Last Kingdom, which is on at the moment. It's a bit like Vikings, but with brains. Based on a series of books by my favourite author Bernard Cornwell who also wrote the Sharpe books.

Interests: HTPC, Web App authoring.

Is BBC iPlayer still working over most VPNs?
I had heard that the BBC are trying to close this loophole.
I'm using Express VPN at the moment if I want to use iPlayer.

I think most of us are successfully watching via a DNS service such as unotelly.
