I had no problems cancelling both my NZ and US netflix accounts online. No time to watch them so away they go till I want it again. Had 2 because I forgot about the US one which I was using on a couple of devices.

It wasn't clear with your original post if you thought that 1-800's won't work (or maybe you just didn't want to pay?).
But in case you thought they don't work, they definitely do.

I phone them frequently (for US conference calls) and can almost hear the womans voice in my head as I type this saying:

"The number you are calling is not toll free outside of the United States. If the call is connected you will pay the international portion ..." (yada yada yada).

You'll hear that twice and then it will connect as normal. In the past this didn't work, but it definitely does now.

Thanks. I didn't know that.

Apparently we can now also dial 001-800... and get through but we will be charged the standard international calling rate from NZ to the US.
