I have an s905 box http://www.gearbest.com/tv-box-mini-pc/pp_321408.html and it plays everything i have thrown at it via Kodi - up to and incl much of the 4k content I have. Have installed various addons eg. Exodus /SportsDevil and these work great too.

Would recommend you have a mouse and keyboard plugged in as it makes it a lot more functional with some apps. (Kodi is 90% good without a kb/mouse)

Also has access to full Play store so you can dl other apps / games etc and it does an OK job with these as well.

Given it can be had for $70nzd landed it is pretty good value. Great as my 2nd streamer - 1st being an Nvidia Shield TV which really is awesome and worth the premium paid as it means I have all HD Audio formats incl Atmos via SPMC (a Kodi fork)

Note: There are other boxes available - S905X which in theory incl HDR and Dolby licenses etc - which may be worth a look subject to actual testing/reviews - this site tends to be a good starting place for such things: http://www.cnx-software.com/

And there are also S912 boxes out which should be better again - ignoring first to market beta boxes.

That box looks like what I'm after.
It says it's got 2GB and 16GB Rom. However, further down it says 1GB and 8Gb Rom. Which one is it?
Also, can I control this with my phone? You mentioned to get a keyboard and mouse. Ideally, I would prefer not to have keyboard and mouse.

And what's the WiFi performance like? The router is approx 6 metres from the TV (in the room next to the living room). My Chromecast works fine with this distance, but not sure if this box will work just as well.

Raspberry Pi 3.  Its what I use.. Setup is so damned simple its not funny.  Download the rom, stick rom onto sdcard, plug sdcard into pi.  I ditched my intel NUC (Win10/Kodi) for my Pi3 running kodi and it works pretty much brilliant.  Only issue is no IR port - fixed by using Yatse for Android on my phone. Much nicer than a dedicated remote.

Have my pi 2 hooked up to my Samsung TV on HDMI cable.
Installed OSMC.
Just need to enable CEC and then the TV remote works all the controls when I am using the pi.
Super simple.

They come in both options - just pick one with 2 and 16. FYI 2GB has been enough for media duty and (light) gaming in my exp.

With Kodi you can use the Kodi remote ie. Kore on your phone and this works. FYI - the supplied IR remote, while simple it does do the job.

Phone control of other apps will be app dependent - but I doubt that you will be able to bin the remote.

As for kb/mouse - it is not reqd for Kodi in normal use - but for set-up, installing addons, configuring etc - it is just a truckload easier then the chicken peck onscreen kb.

And other apps like Spotify, Flickr, fb etc are just so much easier with a mouse in hand - so i really would recommend having one plugged in - even if its out of sight for most usage.

As for wifi - mine is cabled - but I just tested it on wifi (admittedly router in the same room) but it worked fine streaming a 1080p movie from Exodus. Haven't tried it further away so YMMV.

Anyway...hope this helps :)

Thanks.
What's the distance between the router and the box?

If you really don't think that a Pi or Odroid won't do the business which I disagree with. If you want a full service PC running Windows then a beebox is pretty cheap. https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/MBDASR9108/ASRock-BeeBox-Mini-PC-Intel-J3160-Quad-Core-up-to-

I still think the Odroid C2 is the best value for money and a tiny little box the same size as a Pi.

Raspberry pi 3's inbuilt wifi is hopeless when I tried it out. Plenty of cheap dual band sticks will just work on it, only N ones. Not found an AC one that just plugs in and works yet.

there was some fix i had to do to mine for it to be reasonably functional.

Personally i would go higher than a Pi3 spec wise, mine struggled a fair bit with some of the content i threw at it.

What if I want to use VPN? Is this possible with one of these boxes?

I've ordered the box that you recommended (Beelink).

I'm very very pleased with the box!

And the shipping time from China!!!

I ordered the box Tuesday evening, shortly before 7pm.

Shipping was free, but for $6, it would be shipped express.

It arrived at 11am on Friday.

The box itself is great, especially considering how cheap it is.

The speed of my internet that it picks up, isn't the best though. I've hardwired the box and although I've got 100mbit down/20mbit up, I only get around 50mbit down/20mbit up. Still, good enough, considering the price of the box.

Kodi runs well, no issues and worked straight out of the box. VPN is fine as well and I can watch Australian Channel 7, when I switch the VPN on and pretend to be in Australia (there's another post reg. Aussie channels on Kodi here on Geekzone, where Channel 7 is geo blocked).

Exodus works well too. No lagging with the films in HD.

Nice one dude - glad you are happy with it. : ) And that is crazy fast shipping!

Must say I am still impressed with how well these boxes perform their key task ie media playback - as my one plays 1080p sweet and nearly all 4k files as well. Whereas my window based boxes of various spec and vintage almost always struggle with much of my 4k content.

Gear Best is great for shipping speed. It's just a shame that they have made all batteries not able to be shipped to NZ any more.

I've bought a few higher value things from them in the past and even the slow option they seem to have a better route out of China sorted than most of the AliExpress sellers do.

rapberry pi 2 or 3 running OSMC is easily the best aproach imo.
No hassle in setting up at all. OSMC is a version of Kodi built on top of debian specifically for raspberry pi.OSMC
I connect it to my NAS over wifi and can play back 1080p content without issue. he only issue you might strike is with HEVC content which raspberry pi doesn't support (although apparently the raspberry pi 3 does an OK job of HEVC playback)
