Its difficult because we have only had two people call up and actually register their interest in the street so we cant break even on costs. Last time I looked at it, we kept coming across people saying they were already in a contract.

But I am keen to do something for the community - we just need to build a break-even business case which unlocks some govt funding which has been pre-approved.

Give me a call/email and we can chat some more. I have some information which the neighbours might find interesting regarding that particular street for the RBI2 project but I cant talk publicly about it yet

Regarding RBI1....

I understand the antennas need to be mounted like this

on the pole so they are on 45 degree angles and a few inches apart. Someone else can confirm.

Having them vertical or horizontal on the pole I dont think will help because people dont hold cellphones like that and the antennas on the mast are designed to give the best angle for cellular use.

The other issue is the shape of the terrain around you is perfect for signal reflections.

The bits and bytes flow in a direct path, but when there is a hill, a reflection occurs and some of the bits and bytes come in a moment later which means the error correction algorithm needs to work overtime slowing you down.

Some radio technologies take advantage of this, others have problems. I am not sure about 4g RBI.

MadEngineer: Is it only kodi you have problems with? Does YouTube perform ok?

So far YouTube seems okay. It is one of the few that I haven't had any problem with. I haven't done a proper test, though.

Hi Ray,

I will email you in a day or so. I have some things coming up and I need time to formulate a proper response.

Have you changed your voice service to VoIP and locked modem to 4G only? I recall you having sticky 3G issue previously.

Yep, I've done several RBI installs where the antennas are aligned the "wrong" way to pick up signal reflections rather than direct signal path to tower.

I did check that. I have kept an eye on it since and it stays on 4G.

I don't have line of sight to the tower but I know where it is. When I was experimenting with antenna positions I also checked that. It is pointing the right way for that tower and that is also where the signal is best.

Linux:

Provide us some figures at different times and always test to same server

Approx where are you located?

Linux

@Linux: I have now collected a few data points. At 6 pm on Friday test download speed was 2.04 Mbps on DSL Reports. Ping to Dunedin was 125 ms and I got a message that buffer bloat was disabled due to high latency. RSSI was –91 dbm. Streaming was completely impossible.

At 5.30 am on Saturday download speed was 20.64 Mbps, which seems to be about the best I get now, though it is only a little over half of what I was averaging before. RSSI was –83 dbm. RSRQ is always around –10 or –11 db, RSRP about –110 or –111 dbm.

At 11 pm I was getting 3.25 Mbps down. RSSI was –79 dbm. Sunday 11 am 10.23 Mbps down, RSSI –87 dbm. This morning at 3.50 am it was 17.59 Mbps down, RSSI –85 dbm.

All this in contrast to my previous normal download speeds of at least 30 Mbps, sometimes going up to around 50 Mbps. Something is definitely not right here.

RSRP of -110 dBm is marginal.

I have been through all that. When I installed the second antenna I tried every position and combination that was physically possible. The one I settled on gave the best result by far. At the time I was getting 50 Mbps down consistently but I haven't seen that for a long while. There is no point in trying to move the router since I already have two outdoor antennas plugged into it.

I think you need someone to visit with proper meters and testing equipment.

I have also come to that conclusion. It is just a matter of who. Unfortunately all the GZ experts live in Auckland or Wellington.

Ultimately, this comes back to the provider.
