You don't think the Aus thing is some kind of clash when you log in to dns4me and look under User Console > Services at the yellow highlighted stuff and it says 'enabling this will disable the following...'

No, I use the service profiles to avoid that. I created an Oz profile for exactly this reason. It works fine with Kodi so the problem with NextPVR must be something else.

Sorry, I'm a bit confused about this. My brain is old and slow with this kind of thing. I installed NextPVR for Windows on my pc and after some initial problems I now have it working well (except for Australia). Then I decided to try the NextPVR client add-on for Kodi on the same pc. That works perfectly (again, except for Oz). My understanding, possibly wrong, is that the NextPVR programme on the pc acts as a 'back end' and the Kodi add-on as the front end.

So how do I so the same on Android? If I just install the client add-on, nothing happens. I assume I also need a back end to receive the IPTV streams. If that is wrong, how do I set up the NextPVR client?

Wouldn't there be some kind of setting 'NextPVR Hostname' or something, like you presumably did for Kodi, Unless of course you've done that already

There is no NextPVR backend that can be installed on Android. There are clients available for android however, which can stream from NextPVR running on your PC. The two most common clients are either Kodi (with the NextPVR addon), or NextPVR's own Android client.

Yes, you'd still need the backend. It's the thing that does all the hard work communicating to devices, make recordings, streaming live tv etc. A client setup on Android is just a frontend, and talks across the network to a NextPVR backend running on a PC.

Thank you. That clears things up. I was somehow thinking I could use the Android client as a backend and that is where I got confused. I do not have a server running 24/7 and I recently got rid of my media pc in favour of Chromecast so I don't really want to go there again. I was hoping there was a way to do this standalone on the Android box.

Apart from that, do you have any suggestions about geo-unblocking the Oz streams for NextPVR? That would be my other question.

I'm not really sure why that would be, since I don't have a VPN, so I've just stayed away from those specific streams.

I'll see about getting a trial of a VPN, so I can check these.

A good one that offers a generous free trial (or at least did) is Windscribe but the free version does not include Australia. You would have to find test streams in a country that the VPN works for. The USA and Britain are usually included, with one or two others. But I think some offer full service trials for a week or two. I'm not sure. Also, some DNS proxies like DNS4ME offer limited time trials with no restrictions.

The Oz streams are FTA but some are geo-blocked to NZ. I can get a few commercial channels to work intermittently but public service ones like ABC and SBS don't work at all. That is what I use for testing. They work fine on Android and Windows Kodi as long as the DNS proxy is active.

Seven, Nine and Ten (and their extra channels) along with SBS all work fine for me using NextPVR and DNS4me. I haven't looked at ABC for ages as it broke at one point.

I assume you have DNS4ME on your router. I watch ABC all the time, which is why it is important to me. I prefer to have the DNS proxy set to individual devices, and this seems to be what doesn't work with NextPVR as I understand it. Having said that, I am now much more comfortable with NextPVR and except for the proxy issue, it seems to be very well-designed. I am impressed with it and just wish I could get it to work in the way I need. Hopefully that will come.

It shouldn't matter whether the DNS is set on the device or router. It's still doing the same thing.

Some Aussie channels will work by using X-Forwarded-For without needing a DNS service to do this for you.

Unfortunately I'll need to look into this VPN / X-Forwarded-For issue with the Oz channels in a few weeks when I get back from a work trip. I'd wanted to check it out before I left, but I'm snowed under with day-job stuff, so ran out of time.
