Hi all, thanks for the smartvu option, looks like a good way to go, but I was thinking instead of them paying $120 for one is there any way they could access the world cup on their laptop? If so I am thinking it would be just as easy to hook their laptop to their TV via HDMI and stream it from that?

In theory just plugging in laptops into TV should "just work".... but sometimes it just doesnt.

Mirroring the screen top to TV occasionally runs into resolution issues and other fiddley issues.

Try it an see. (Maybe see if they can connect and run youtube on their tv as a test.)

Turn every thing off (TV and PC) and see if your grandparents can turn on the pc and tv.

Find the correct web address. Select whatever mirroring option required. Resize what ever window etc

If it all goes well, well maybe you have a solution.

(my dad no issues, my mum not a hope in heck)

You did not mention the laptop at all. In fact wanted a Dummies guide. The Smartvu is the dummies option.

If you plug a laptop a good option is to Extend the monitor instead of mirror.

Just be mindfull that older laptops won't have enough GPU power for HD in some cases.

I feel you are making it too hard for the grandparents. They don't want to know about plugging a laptop into a TV, and making it work. Your thread implies it needs to be simple. If you get a box that is already plugged in, you do that, it has a remote, you have added the app, all they need to do is change HDMI inputs, thats on the TV remote, and it works. Off course start the app. Apple TV4, or an equivalent Android box that has the app

They can turn on a TV. If they have to be told to also turn on the box, and to change HDMI settings on the TV remote, thats not hard. Start the app, also not hard
