Hi all,

So my grandparents have asked for my help in setting them up to watch the rugby world cup at their place, the thing is I don't know much about it. I understand a smart TV is the way to go as long as you have an internet connection, but what do you do once you have the smart TV? is there an app you need to download onto the TV or something?

Also, they live in Darfield, a town about 30 mins out of Christchurch where there is no fibre broadband, I believe they are on either ADSL or VDSL, will this be fast enough?

If anyone could give me some sort of rugby world cup 2019 for dummies that would be great.

Hi, Spark recommend a connection of at least 15Mb/s, so most reasonable ADSL connections or better will suffice, real streaming data rates are up to 6Mb/s, but you need extra capacity for other things happening on the link, and also important is a good uplink to to allow streaming link managment and TCP ack etc, so ideally better than 800kb/s

As for a smart TV, if they dont have one then they are better going with a Chromecast device which can be a bit fiddly, so an even better option in my view as an AppleTV.

check the spark website... it gives you an idea on what you can do.

Likely people will recommend "SmartVU", as this will be the easiest option of the lot if they dont have a smart TV. If they do, then simply install the spark sport app (if thats an option). YOu will need register on the spark website to set up an account before logging into the spark sport app on your chosen device.

You do know that all the all blacks games will be on TV (hour delay) for the pool matches and dont quote me, I think they will be live for the semis/finals.

As already mentioned if they only care about watching NZ and don't care about a 1hr delay on the All Blacks pool games (semis and final are live) their best bet is just to watch the games on TVNZ.

If they don't have a Smart TV I wouldn't bother with a Chromecast - that needs them to have a Smartphone.

Instead think of using the Freeview devices. The SmartVu is perfect - it works with a remote control like any recorder. Their TV will need to have a HDMI input for this and will need WiFi available to connect.

Folks, it is fine for you and me. Parents-in-law, grandparents and others may not have the same tech knowledge for this. Even with help.

Less is more. Get the SmartVU device, there's a remote control with very few buttons, that's all.

The advantage with the smart vu (apart from being easy to setup and use) is that it has apps like Netflix, light box etc $$$ and TVNZ on demand, 3now etc (free) that they might find quite good to use. Assuming they can get a good enough internet connection.

I would go the smart vu box. Chromecast is just asking for problems.

The SmartVU is the one being promoted by Freeview as their official streaming client isn't it? If so I would definately get one of those if you need something to add smarts to a TV.
