I'm about to start renting and possibly purchasing on iTunes. I grabbed an ATV4K last week so its been nice to watch Greyhound and a few other Apple TV+ things. Quick question when you purchase is the data stored locally or just available through itunes anytime you want to watch it?

Available through iTunes any time want to watch. Purchase/rental is linked to Apple account, not device.
Rentals have about 30 days to start viewing, then once hit play 48 hours to watch as much as like. I have played a second viewing on different Apple TV.
Sometimes it won't show up on second device, but if I search for it when that happens it shows as purchased/rented.

A tip I’d like to share here. When browsing the iTunes Store don’t overlook the movie bundles. I have picked up several bargains. This week I got Birds of Prey/Suicide Squad for $19.99. Birds of Prey is $19.99 on its own. Both have Dolby Vision/ DolbyAtmos onboard.
I won’t spend more than $10 on a single movie (they all reduce if you are happy to wait) so this bundle Is now in my iTunes collection. That takes care of my $20 budget for this week, so I had better stop browsing, before I get tempted to spend more ๐

What irks me is the DRM and that there's no "Movies Anywhere" service here in NZ. I would love to rent or buy from Apple, but until they make it playable on all devices it's a firm 'no' from me. Music is different because Apple removed the DRM years ago. But for movies, it's Google Play for me, merely because it will play on the devices I want it to, i.e. Chromecast from my Android phone.
Now if only providers would allow Dolby Atmos over Dolby Digital Plus on Chromecast Ultra. In the US Vudu does it, but no-one else as far as I know.
Yes, I would love for NZ to have the same options for streaming as the US have, but, until then, iTunes will suffice.
Google Play is an option, but none of their titles stream in Dolby Vision/HDR10/Dolby Atmos. At least that was the case last time I used the service.

I thought that I would check to see if The Fifth Element had been upgraded to 4K on NZ iTunes. I typed the title into the search box, and the movie was not available to purchase or rent, so I had a little panic attack and fired up my Apple TV 4K to check if it was still in my library. Yes, it was there, and it played okay. It was still in HD, but I had forgotten how good this film looks in HD. Upscaled by my TV, the video looked great, so I don't really care if they upgrade it or not ๐

The Back to the Future Trilogy will be remastered in 4K and released in the USA on UHD. October 20th 2020.
Not sure if we get it at the same time or not, but I suspect that we wont be far behind. To celebrate the 35th Anniversary of the first film, The three films will be released in Dolby Vision/HDR10+/Dolby Atmos, and will also be available on digital for the first time in UHD.
Now, anyone who has already bought the Trilogy on iTunes (I picked it up for $14.99) should have their purchase upgraded to Dolby Vision/Dolby Atmos for free whenever its available here in NZ. As its one of my favourite movie trilogies of all time, I'm really looking forward to it.
Universal have been knocking it out of the park lately with their 4K releases. Lets hope that its a thing of beauty.

Here is a tip for those of you who don't like to see the black bars (letterboxed) in iTunes movies. Well, you paid good money for a large screen TV, so you would like to see all of the screen being used, right?
This function, on both an Apple TV 4th Gen and an Apple TV 4K, both running tvOS 11.3 or later works for movies bought or rented from iTunes. I don't have Prime Video or Netflix movies, so I haven't tested those.
Basically, if you’re watching letterboxed content, you can toggle back and forth between letterbox mode and full-screen mode with a light double tap on the remote’s glass touch sensitive area. This is is not a press-click, but a light, quick, double tap. Try it next time you are watching a letterboxed movie. ๐

Awesome! Also a favourite of mine. I’ve been holding off buying the iTunes bundle as I figured it would get a 4K release. I didn’t realise they upgraded existing ones.
I have had several titles upgraded, but unfortunately we don't get them all, like the US does. Its just some studios like Lionsgate that may not.
BTTF though is Universal, so I'm expecting an upgrade.

I watched a preview on IPad. Paused the movie. Did the double tap. Yep, it filled the screen, but also lost a lot of the left side and right side of the picture.
Expect it’ll be the same AppleTV. Sometimes more is less. I.e filling more of TV screen but actually seeing less picture - zooming in.

The double tap does zoom in and out again. But its the compromise that the viewer has to make if wanting to watch a movie in full screen. Many people will be okay with that, if it means that they can "lose" the black bars.

It looks like a wait and see for the BTTF 4K upgrade. Just checked Jaws which was recently released on 4K UHD (I bought the disc), and its still in HD. Also 1917 has Dolby Vision but no Dolby Atmos. Both titles are Universal, and the US iTunes site has both in DV/DA
