We have the standard subscription - we probably are one of the (few) households who kind of "under utilises" our Netflix subs - we only watch Korean TV Series (and the odd Chinese TV series) on it.  The only English TV show that we've watch is Designator Survivor Season 3.

However, I must say there are quite a few good Korean TV Series there tho so I think we will continue with the subscription...

Edit: updated subscription to standard and not basic, and fixed some typos...

tehgerbil:

8-14% price increase in 2 years does not represent 8-14% increase in value in 2 years for your average subscriber.

Netflix have cut their marketing budget, and increased their subscriber revenue as an immediate cash boost. Gotta make them shareholders happy eh.

You also forget their boom over the last 18 months or so when the majority of the western world have been in various stages of lockdowns with not much to do other than watch streaming services.

Netflix hikes NZ pricing i wonder if this would affect Sparks bundle?

Still awaiting an answer to this question.

Will spark swallow the cost or renegotiate with Netflix and notify customers and give us the chance to cancel or accept the new fees?

Hmmm, interesting one, they can hardly say 'Get Netflix on Spark Broadband plans' and then charge a $1.50 a month to cover a price hike, they'll have to swallow it surely, and then in a month or two advise the cost of broadband is going up.

Cancelled our sub. I know it means squat to them but I am a kid of the 70s protest so can't resist to protest against an increase many times the CPI.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Been paying for a netflix sub every month since 2013 and I am now considering ditching it.

currently on the premium plan for 4K and a 14% increase is pushing it considering the content is so scattered around multiple providers now

Imagine if Sky put their prices up by this percentage. The outrage would cause riots :)

but that same article says:

It's been a year of price hikes for streamers.

Mid-May, Sky increased the price of Neon by 15 per cent to $15.99 a month. The move followed Sky's purchase of Spark's Lightbox service, which was rolled into Neon.

we're on the premium plan mainly for the number of screens... $25 is getting up there. also, we're getting it via spark and paying a $5 'premium' on top of the monthly broadband package. if they swallow the price hike for those on the standard plan, they'll have to do the same for us... wonder, wonder...

Am I correct in thinking that Netflix is the only mainstream streaming service that has price plans according to stream quality? (SD/HD/4K)

To which I think, how much longer before consumers realise that it shouldn't be relevant, and what they pay for should be in the best quality by default? If you pay for 4K, Netflix I believe will still degrade your stream on the fly if it encounters buffering/network re-routing.

Disney+, AppleTV+, Amazon Prime (AFAIK) have all decided on a flat fee, and that stream quality is irrelevant to the price equation.

Like the olden days when Sky thought it was a genius idea to charge extra for receiving the handful of channels (including free to air ones) in HD.  Naturally it was already being beamed out in HD so was an artificial barrier to raise fees.

Mine renews on the 11th. I’ll let that one renew (should be at current rates), and cancel once get email about the increase.

Have plenty to watch with Disney and I’ll add Prime Video back in. Was happy with Disney price increase as they added heaps more value at same time.

Netflix getting up to Sky starter price now, and they don’t even have to install any equipment.

We also didn’t pay for any part of the delivery mechanism. Now they’re using the internet which the end user is also paying for.

It’s $3.00 on the premium plan increase. It’s not the one off increase but the cumulative of all the increases. It’ll be over $30 in a few years at this rate for the top one.

I notice in South Korea there’s one ISP that is attempting to charge Netflix for traffic generated, Netflix thinks they should price their broadband according to the end customers of the ISP. Netflix lost court case and is now appealing.

https://www.google.co.nz/amp/s/techcrunch.com/2021/09/30/south-korean-isp-sk-broadband-counterclaims-against-netflix-for-bandwidth-usage-fees/amp/

I predict less then 13% will quit Netflix so it will be a revenue winning move, but if increases keep going more will think about it.

Also in days pre Netflix, Piracy rates a lot higher.

Im going to cancel it I think. Havent actually sat down and watched something in months. I want 4k but dont want 4 screens at the same time. Absurd to have the 2 things connected like that.

Others that use my account will be disappointed but its quickly becoming poor value for the typical 2-3 movies a month I have time to watch on it, and it seems that the series X is ok doing direct play of all the 4k stuff I have tried off my plex server seedbox somewhere in europe.
