I thought TVNZ's audience was mainly elderly? I can't imagine the government allowing them to shut down their linear service for at least another ten years due to the political implications.

Age has no bearing on the use of the internet. All the elderly neighbours around me use streaming, there is next to zero TV masts or Satellite dishes around me. It is a bit of a agest trope that age stops you from using the internet's or those dang new fangled do dads.
Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.
As far as I am aware my parents do not have access to streaming or any inclination towards it. They still record scheduled content on linear TV.

My M-in-law is the same . Has access to WiFi in her rest home but has no idea on how to use it for streaming and relies on over the air TV for her entertainment.

I only watch streaming TV and I am nearly 80. What point are you trying to make?

That's fairly obvious isn't it that not all all old people are as tech savvy as you are..

At the risk of going OT, how viable is Freeview currently with broadcasters making noise about going online-only? I'm starting to expect an announcement that the Terrestrial network will be lined up for shutdown and go Satellite only.

I absolutely understand the commercial reasoning about ending linear broadcast, however post-Gabrielle the Government made many noises about broadcast being a vital Civil Defence lifeline. Having personally lived through many days unexpectedly with no power, transistor radios were the ONLY communication with the outside world. There was effectively no internet because devices couldn't be powered and almost all mobile networks were down. In a country where almost everywhere is potentially at risk of some large disaster some compromise needs to be made.

Excellent point. I also depend on transistor radios when power and Internet go out. I have a UPS but that didn't do much good when my Internet went down. The transistor has given me important support every time all other means of communication failed.

skewt: In regards to the Freeview convo , TAB have put Trackside 1 and 2 on there today
That will make some of the oldies happy as they no longer have to pay Sky for the service.

Trackside 1 and 2 have been available outside of SKY via streaming for a few years now.
No sign of any DVB T broadcast of them yet in Nelson.
I forgot that horse racing TV was still a thing.
