Correcting myself, our TV is a Philips not a Panasonic.  That's two Philips devices I have that are definately not the quality we used to associate with the brand back-in-the-day.  And not fair on Panasonic, who're usually better :)

(TV is https://www.amazon.com.au/Philips-43PFT6915-79-43-inch-Assistant/dp/B09CTDN286 - released in 2021, I got it from PBTech, would not recommend... panel is fine, but it's just underpowered and unstable as a whole. TVNZ+ is quite unreliable on it - but video quality is usually fine. It stalls, lags, pauses during playback, etc.  Live TV is usually ok.)

Philips is just like sansui etc - brand sold to someone to use on stuff made in the same factories that make all the other no brand stuff.

All TVs are underpowered CPUs because why put in what 90% of people will never recognise as being a thing in it and most of the rest will go oh well and plug in a box.

Personally I would prefer it if TVs were just a dumb panel with a few HDMI ports, and priced accordingly. Then owners can then connect their own sources and audio according to their budget and personal taste.

Dealing with a bunch of older relatives, they by far prefer to have everything built into the TV.

They would be no cheaper. The CPU in TVs is close enough to zero cost compared to the rest of it, and they would need something there still to run the menus and let you choose inputs etc. They would also then not get the money for the buttons on the remotes that noone wants so would have to retail for a higher price than a junk but barely runs android TV.

Could be related to ISP.

Some ISP's have pretty un-intuitive routing hampering performance of some platforms and conversely some ISP host streaming service relays enhancing performance of other platforms.

e.g. a 600 Mbps Ookla speed test to an ISP's on-premises server is no reflection of impediments to a stream that has to come via Japan.

TVNZ+ curled up its toes on our LG C1 last night.... still trucking along on the Apple TV,

any other brands having a similar issue,

"Some TVNZ+ viewers will notice they aren’t able to use the streaming application on Monday morning.
The issue became apparent on Sunday night when users streaming on ‘select CTV models’ couldn’t watch anything.
CTV stands for connected TV, any television set that is connected to the internet.
A TVNZ spokesperson said a team were “working hard to resolve this alongside our vendors”.

TVNZ App on our TV (Panasonic, but it's a rebrand of something) has gotten to the point of unwatchability now. I assume it's a processing/codec issue as we don't have the same problems (or at least, the same severity) on our Chromecast. But yeah, watching TVNZ on our living room TV is basically not a thing anymore.

I assume this is a recurrent issue through a combination of borderline-spec TV's and challenges around app efficiency.
The TV has very occasional struggles with Neon and Prime as well but both are quite watchable, as is Disney+ (which I've got suspended right now). Netflix is fairly flawless.

So back to it being a TVNZ specific issue.

how much of that is lack of app development by tvnz supporting for your brand of tv.   Was always a dangerous game to get into.    Compare plex to Jellyfin of clients (ie the sheer number of plex clients vs jellyfin) to see an example of this.
