My question is then, would I need Plex or Infuse with this setup, I'm thinking not but I am not conversant with Plex or Infuse.

I have my Movie back ups on my PC from which I share two folders with Infuse 7 on the same home network. Works flawlessly.

Your set up with iMac should not need Infuse, but having said that, I have never owned an iMac.

I do not know much, if anything, about Plex or Infuse. We have a totally Apple household and with the soon expected arrival of the new TV it will round things out nicely. We have Ethernet and home Wifi connections between the iMac and Yamaha AV Reciever RX-V1085 and the 2014 Panasonic Viera TH-L50E6Z via our Spark Smart modem and an Edimax 5 port Ethernet Switch. So I plan to connect to my iMac where I have bunch of movies stored which appear in the iMac Apple TV app.

My question is then, would I need Plex or Infuse with this setup, I'm thinking not but I am not conversant with Plex or Infuse.

I would recommend using/buying Infuse.

I've a Mac household as well, have got subscriptions to both Plex and Infuse. Infuse is by far the easier to configure & use, and has a nice user interface.

There is the app on tvOS, as well as iOS, and they've also just launched an app for macOS on the Mac App Store, but it requires macOS 11 (Big Sur).

You can download the free Infuse app on the phone (maybe also tvOS as well) to give it a run and see how you like it, and from there you could then pay NZ$16 /year for what then becomes 'Infuse Pro'. It's well worth it , IMO, and I use it everyday.

To configure Infuse you don't need either the Mac or iOS apps, you can just configure it all via the Infuse app on the TV. All you need do on your Mac is turn on file sharing, and select which folders you want to share. I would recommend creating a separate, non-admin user account on your Mac just for this purpose.

Another way is to move the movies to an Ext HDD and slave it off a  router as a Quick and Dirty NAS,

Then you can point infuse at that shared disk and you don't even need to have the mac running to stream your stuff to the AppTV

Thx for all the info guys - plenty to think about. I will give the present setup ago when the TV arrives and see how that goes.

I do intend to start buying movies off Apple especially their upgraded/updated bundles and I want to store them locally and not in the cloud. My Spark Smart modem does have a USB port and that I presume is where I will hang the ext drive off.

Yip, the spark modem should share a HDD, but it might be picky on how big it is...

FYI, as far as I know, you can only download HD (1080p) versions of purchased movies from iTunes, the 4K versions can only be streamed (not downloaded) via AppleTV hardware, as far as I know.

I imagine that watching via https://tv.apple.com in a browser (use Safari for fully 'qualified' Apple experience) is also limited to 1080p, even on a 4K display, but I might be wrong on this.

See this is one of my biggest gripes with Apple - I have bought it so why can I not have the physical item (data in this case) in my own hands and not in theirs. ❓

Grrr

Welcome to the wonderful world of movie licensing, you may think you actually "bought it" but in reality its just a license to view that has prety much any caveats they want to impose on it...

Granted that technically similar rules exist around physical media, however many countries explicitly allowed format shifting from physical forms... (Although I'm pretty sure that window is now well closed to being expanded as all the content providers now want to stream everything rather than sell you a shiny thing)

Any guesses on max size ?

Is it just a case of plug-n-play and then Infuse will find it ?

The Arnold Schwarzenegger action movie LAST ACTION HERO (1993) has been upgraded to Dolby Vision.

One of Arnie's most underrated films IMO. A real tongue-in-cheek actioner.

Another vote for Infuse, one of the best programs Ive ever paid for, its brilliant!

My setup has MBP, connected to ext HDD. Point Infuse to the HDD and then use Infuse on phone/ipad and apple tv. I can watch all my shows on iPad in my bedroom or apple tv in the lounge.
