everything is free on the internet, people pay for convenience and quality. i could just download movies illegally, or i could quickly just pay ~$5-7 for a 5.1 1080p movie rental/purchase and start playing in seconds.

I guess thats the market theyre going for, and for $8 a month meh, who really cares.

theres been months where i never used netflix ( a while ago) but didnt cancel because it was so little i didnt bother.

I totally agree, if I was into porn, I would rather to pay and have 7.1 dts hd master audio.But I'm not...
Regarding the Fire Tv it looks interesting, will wait and see the Xbmc version. But with the licence on dts master audio, Im not quite sure they will be able to implement it so probably have to stick with the dolby digital.

So Apart from being a bit newer and little more grunt I haven't quite got my head around how this is better than teh roku3? Is it a bit more open (based on android?) so general android apps are installable (where the roku has dedicated apps).

I thought so, and given there wont be any "local" retailers, there will be no support for local services ie quickflix, ezyflix, Premier Leagure pass, skygo, tvnz and tv3.

If they have android apps available (like skygo is planning) then its a matter of installing them. TVNZ or tv3 prefer Samsung devices anyway but once they open that up it will be all good. Ok, that explains your excitement levels a little more. I'd be curious how open the platform is in terms of the apps installable. I'd assume you'd need root and possible sideload some of the apps.

for $100 its not a bad price, i would get one over a roku or apple tv. but currently i still prefer google tv, even though its end of life basically, but you can sideload apps and have access to the play store. google need to hurry up and bring out their actual one.

The first devices have landed. They are capable of sideloading apps! xbmc is up and running. You have to sideload via ADB, no root is required.

Netflix offers SuperHD as well (which is the first android device i believe?)

Does that mean you'd be able to sideload TV3 and TVNZ ondemand? Or can you not get hold of the packages to do that or will they only work on a Samsung?

That said, and OT, why haven't Samsung released a similar box? Maybe it would hurt SmartTV sales?

you might be able to side load apps, but most wont work due to requiring a touch screen/mouse interface.

Pretty sure theres ways around this.. An airmouse comes to mind, there is also a usb input so plugging in a mouse maybe an option anyway.

EDIT: Mouse confirmed to work!

ahh i see. Still no information about a switchable psu, ive asked the question elsewhere.. you would assume it would but you never know.

It would hurt the sales of their bluray players. I know 2 people that have bought them and basically only put dvds they already had into them since they just wanted the smart tv stuff.

The smart tv bluray I got for mum was locked to only outputting 50hz in apps so made a mess of most youtube content.
