My issue with Netflix on Apple TV is not being able to control the quality. It will stream whatever your connection can provide...in my case super HD... A total bandwidth hog...especially with 80GB cap....

A possible work around would be to limit the bandwidth to that device, but only if your router can do that.

I thought you can set the bandwidth Netflix will use on your Netflix account. After logging into their website I think its under playback settings or something. I use a PS3 so not sure if this setting works with the Apple TV.

I thought you can set the bandwidth Netflix will use on your Netflix account. After logging into their website I think its under playback settings or something. I use a PS3 so not sure if this setting works with the Apple TV.

Yep, under settings select playback settings:

Data Usage per Screen
Auto
Low (basic video quality, up to 0.3 GB per hour)
Medium (standard video quality, up to 0.7 GB per hour)
High (best video quality, up to 3 GB per hour for HD, 7 GB per hour for Ultra

I assume changing these affects all devices using the account, rather than what happens when selecting quality on the fly on a device that allows this. That said, I've found data usage on our ATV fine, and quality's been excellent set to 'auto' and using UFB (100 GB).

Why not bump your plan up to one with more data - wouldn't be much extra, the cost of buying a whole new device is probably equal to about a years worth of the extra plan. And at least then you'll be able to enjoy your content in HD. And just out of interest... what device are you talking about that even lets you control the quality of the stream?

Not that I do it much (preferring the ATV or iPad), I noticed these controls are available when watching Netflix in a browser.

Yup, aware of the options in-browser but never seen a device with such options.

You cant get around a VPN. That would throw my connection in every way dead center in the USA.

I wanted to add that they can block the VPNs if they wish by blocking the landing data centres. CatchupTV in the UK did this and blocked all the datacentres that had any form of overseas VPN landing in it. They only unblocked it when you could prove that you where in the UK and that the VPN was a work related connection that you couldn't circumvent...

Easy solution. Get a bigger cap. Lots of options out there, possibly for less than you pay today

Agree, and it's quite prevalent already, and suits their iTunes accounts. In saying that I've introduced quite a few people to the Chromecast and Google Play, the control from your phone, is an easy sell.

Personally I have to say I love my Chromecast + phone/tablet, it's a very simple interface and the Chromecast is super cheap to pickup and doesn't lock you into the apple world (it locks you into Google instead, but at least the devices are cheaper!). Had a sick daughter at home today and she spent the whole day watching NF. It's only a relatively recent addition to my household but the kids love it and still trying to convince my better half we can dump Sky.

You're running NF via a Chromecast??

Jee Wiz...Wish I thought of that...!

Unfortunately I'm not the only bill payer in the house, the other people in the house are broke and don't want to spend more on Internet. We're actually on 40GB at the moment, but have been surviving on the 200GB provided free when you sign up with Slingshot. Long story short, internet upgrade isn't a huge possibility. We're getting fibre soon so that's going to be funny to see how far 40GB goes.

What wouldn't hurt anyone is building the bandwidth selection option into devices like the Apple TV. Yes I'm very well aware of the fact you can change it in the browser...but these settings don't apply to devices...

Pretty sure the Vodafone transparent proxy is ALWAYS going to cause issues regardless of the VPN, as Netflix is now incompatible with ISP caching.

As they've said, VF needs to basically disable caching for the Netflix IP ranges.
