RGP: We recently subscribed to Netflix using Unotelly and now Dns4me and love it - no adds ,watch when you want its great. Use LemonTv for seaching titles. This allowed us to ditch sky movies. We then realised the only thing we have MySky for is Sky Sports - so 2 weeks ago we got rid of that as well. Bought a Panasonic recorder - what a relief to be free of sky after nearly 20 years - please don't add the $ up - I don't want to know!! Thanks to geekzone posts I've been able to follow setup guides and help for netflix, unotelly, dns4me etc - invaluable information - thanks

I just subscribed to dns4me for a year after my 14 day trial ended (thanks Geekzone for the promo code!) and enjoying everything Netflix has to offer. It was really easy to set everything up and very straight forward. Really appreciate everyone's help on the forum for technically challenged people like me

If Non Sky options replace Sky for the content you enjoy,, then off course its a no brainer, but certain sports are an issue. Ditch Sky, get Netflix, Lightbox, Unotelly, subscribe to the legit sport streaming options to cover the Golf, Foosball, F1, MotoGP, etc, and it all adds up, and its fragmented. These factors keep many on Sky, its on one recording box. Not defending the aforementioned posts, as I also want to remove Sky, just saying.

Have been thinking about switching from Sky to Lightbox/Netflix recently. Like most people with Sky, we only really have it for the sport. Virtually everything else we watch is on the free channels, aside from occasionally a series pops up on the Box/UKTV etc but probably nothing that can't be found another way. I have PLP for the premier league anyway which is my main sport, so other than that I'd just need somewhere for Champions League, FA Cup, A League, tennis and cricket. Shouldn't be too difficult to find somewhere to stream those.

Will give the free trials a go to see how well they work for us and maybe consider the switch for after the rugby World Cup. Floated the idea to my other half for the first time last night and she was open to it. She's not very techy and was worried about not being able to record (since we never watch anything live) so I had to explain that Lightbox/Netflix are on demand and the stuff is always there so it's just like recording, and we'd get a Freeview recorder to replace the MySky so could still record anything we'd want on the free channels.

Only worry is our internet is not great. Despite living in one of the largest suburbs in the capital we are still on ADSL with UFB not coming to our area for another year. And even then we are renting up a shared driveway with 3 other houses so there are a lot of people who would have to agree to the driveway being dug up. My main problem with Premier League Pass is having no app available to me (got an LG smart TV, PS4, PS3, windows tablet and phone) and it doesn't always work great with the laptop connected to the TV. It's encouraging that there would be apps available to me for Lightbox and Netflix which I assume would provide a better experience.

Good ADSL (say 5mb+) for netlfix/lighbox is fine we can watch 2 streams at the same time with no issues, just get a chromecast for the wife to use its very easy to use from smartphone/tablet.

Cool, think our internet should be able to cope with it then. Don't think we'd have any need for Chromecast as we have a PS3 and PS4 which she uses so she should be able to open an app in them. I believe there is also a Netflix app for LG TVs and the other thread also makes mention of one being developed for Lightbox so don't think we'd need to buy any extra equipment.

we are also dropping $ky at the end of the super 15 season and the house move next month, we have a quote for them to do a sky dish install at the new house for $50 and we will stay on a basic package for 3 months then switch to freeview+lightbox+netflix (free-light-flix....FLN...freenetlight...FNL...) and look at streaming sports from somewhere.

im going to ask sky about keeping their box or failing that will buy a Vu Duo with a card slot for possible future season pass purchase.

that's the plan.

that's what I figured, although I still have an old Sky box which they never collected when I upgraded to Mysky, the installer pretty much said ..keep it.

Yeah that's bloody weird. Total cockiness to think your customers don't need to know what you're about?!

My local video shop is closing tomorrow and I'm wondering if it's time to start streaming instead.
Want to compare offerings.
Still prefer the higher quality bluray video and hd audio to be honest though.

I can't understand what the problem is here, you would think that it's in everybody's interests to have a full up-to-date index of everything that's available from Netflix on the NZ Netflix web site - I wonder why they don't do this?

I agree with your comment about blu-ray content and with these discs you also get a lot of extras about how the film was made etc. You can also often get sub-titles which are useful for people who are hard of hearing or for when the sound isn't all that clear! I am not sure whether internet streaming services for films include the sub-titles that are on DVDs?

It reminds me of the '70s where people had big wooden solid speakers for the sound quality, and then opted for smaller and lighter products over the years for convenience. A bluray can hold what, 50GB of data, so the potential is great for low compression, good quality picture and HD audio. I wonder how streaming options compare, but I do accept that this is where we are headed.

Can I get a movie as son as it's available outside of the cinemas?

Do streaming services all show the same movies and TV shows, or do we have to pay for several providers to see these etc?

Man I sound like a grumpy old man, but I'm curious as to how these are better, or once again are we trading quality for convenience of a direct download?

Take a punt, subscribe to the free trials at Netflix and Lightbox and find out for yourself. They are quite different flavours so you might choose to keep both. Quality-wise they are both faultless full HD on my (no so fast) connection and the audio is great.

Nothing lost by trying, unless your wife loves rom-coms and you hate them, in which case steer well clear of Netflix. And assuming you have a device which can play both, of course.
