Personally I prefer using our current ATV compared to our HTPC (a Mac Mini) as it is less complex and more easy to control via a simple remote, and therefore has considerably higher WAF. The more complex a device and the more it can do, the more likely there'll be problems and the more difficult they'll be to fix; the ATV just works.

While it would be great if the new ATV can support Kodi (wishful thinking, but this nearly all the HTPC is used for now days), even just allowing the development of apps so all SVOD services we must currently either airplay or watch on a different device (BBC iPlayer, Channel 4, ITV, TVNZ, TV3) would make it worth it (as long as the price doesn't go too much further north of it its initial RRP).

Speaking of SVOD services - I doubt we'll watch Channel 4 content again on the ATV (via Airplay) as I just can't cope with the compulsory 4-minute ad break (including before the programme even starts) - is there really no way to be able to skip them?!

This. Under my telly I have a Windows 10 machine with Kodi/Plex Home Theatre (and kodi has plexbmc), a Roku 3 and an apple tv 3. Most used is the Roku 3 as it has a pretty good native plex app, netflix it nice on it also and youtube tv. The atv occasionally gets used when the roku has an issue.

For streaming stuff, I'd sometimes start the computer (Channel 4 UK or itv - but lots of ads on those platforms) - but it annoys me that I have to use a keyboard when on a browser. Even sites, or the official netflix app - when trying to use the keyboard it moves the scroll bars not the selected video - which means you can't switch it to use a remote.

I like the idea of an app store for apple tv, as like the chromecast, I'm hoping by being a supported device - ie sold in nz, that it will get some love from local distributers like they have done for smart tvs and chromecast.

Im sure it would. Apps turn up first in iOS usually, so I'd expect that to include the ATV4. Given that NZ on demand isn't airplay compatible, I wonder if they would make an app? Or if we used iOS to make a webapp, whether that would actually work, as they seem to disallow direct play on a TV unless you have the Samsung smart hub app. Aside from TV , if the ATV4 catered for all streaming needs in the one box, it would be handy to switch to another app when desired, e.g. Met Service, News apps, sport apps, game apps, banking apps, anything really.

I don't see why they wouldn't considering there are iphone/ipad apps (normally at the expense of Windows and android apps).

That would be awesome. If I never see the "sofatime sloth" advert that'd suit me just fine.

That would be awesome. If I never see the "sofatime sloth" advert that'd suit me just fine.

Occasionally I'd have success with the channel 4 plex channel or kodi add on. They didn't seem to play the ads which was good. But it's been a while since I've attempted it. LIke you I got sick of the ads (and broken add ons) and found content via other means.

If the new ATV supports apps, and native apps for the streaming services my family use (Netflix, Lightbox, TVNZ and TV3) become available I will probably get one and re-purpose the Mac Mini that is currently in the media center. I would even consider getting two and putting the second one on the kids TV if the price remains similar to the current ATV. But if Airplay from an iPad is still required I won't bother.
