I think they would only have a problem if I am earning money from there content. But if I'm not and it will all be free, I don't see why guys like TVNZ or Mediaworks will have a problem, it's just more eyes viewing there content at no cost to them, and i'm not getting money from it. I don't know, will see what happens, wanna see if it's possible to stream it first in the spare time.

I think it may have to do with licensing. If TV2 is showing an American film, and you rebroadcast it, expect a knock on the door.

Of course not, since its only an idea at the moment.

Ask a question like this on geekzone and you will often get legal advice instead of an actual answer, I've noticed.

Once I asked about upgrading the HDD on my mysky box and you should see the number of sky lawyers that came out to tear me a new one ha ha. Although, I suspect they were not really lawyers, and probably did not work for sky either.

I guess they are trying to help, but I look at this in the same way as people who block the fast lane in the motorway by doing exactly 100kph , on the rationale that it is their job to enforce the limit on others. I think the correct action is to get out of the way and call *555 to let the professionals deal with it.

Regarding your question ::

No (we can already stream tv though, via tvnz online etc, not realtime but who cares). I think the on demand aspect is superior to real time .

No (as per the first question, why record when ondemand is available).

Wasn't trying to dampen your enthusiasm, merely to point out possible trouble if trying to 'share' the system in any way.

To the original point of 'how can I make something like this work?', probably the easiest way is one you already mentioned in your first post: Use a Slingbox!

There are posts around here somewhere, (or maybe some other NZ forum) about using one with a MySky HDi. For your situation, you could simply use a FreeviewHD recorder instead. So if you had a Slingbox connected up to a FreeviewHD recorder, (through a component converter if you want it HD), set up in an area with FreeviewHD coverage (perhaps Auckland or Christchurch as you mentioned) and a good (probably fibre is best) internet connection at that end, and then a good internet connection at your end too, then you'd be set. You have full control of the FreeviewHD recorder from your end via the internet/Slingbox.

Just seems a lot of effort to 'watch live TV in HD' and 'record TV in HD'. Easier to do, I would have thought, is a good internet connection at your place + a DNS service. That opens you up to just about any streaming service you desire, (and probably just about anything you want to watch), with a lot less effort and cost. Just saying...

Not sure who is 'in charge' of setting up terrestrial towers in NZ (Freeview maybe?) but it is Kordia who own/run most of them. Pretty unlikely they will extend terrestrial coverage any further. I think the coverage is supposed to be something like 87% now so further expansion just isn't worth the additional cost. It would be far easier/cheaper for Freeview to pay Sky to unecrypt the HD versions of One, TV2 and TV3 already being transmitted! Then FreeviewHD would be available nationwide!

I guess that people here who talk about that also think about the scenario of how they would feel if it was someone else using their property be it physical or intellectual without getting their permission first.
