If 'normal' BBC gets to difficult to access, would anyone know what BBC America's like, assuming its DNSable - would it be a reasonable alternative or is it full of adverts and interminable Eastenders reruns ?

PhantomNVD: I particularly like that they say it works as well as the previous detector vans, which have NEVER been used to prosecute a single case and are widely ridiculed as smoke and mirrors.
Personally, I think they heading toward NFlix territory as they expand their global client base:

Has anyone noticed the latest iPlayer upgrade? It happened sometime this week. I used to be able to download BBC programmes with IDM, which bypasses the DRM restrictions of the iPlayer downloader, but now it no longer works. This is not a biggie for me because I have other ways of doing this, but I’m curious what has changed. I know access is supposed to be restricted from 1 September but this is something else.

Haven't noticed anything in particular. i may (or may not) know someone who has get_iplayer downloading something at this very moment (definitely not me under any circumstances obviously).

Something has definitely changed. The iPlayer downloader works as it always has, but I can no longer download flv files with IDM as I could before.

IDM stopped working for me months ago
Common sense is not as common as you think.
That's strange. Did you allow it to update? Mine went a bit funny sometime ago as a result of iPlayer changes. It used to work faultlessly for multiple downloads but then it started hanging at the end or it would take hours to complete. But single downloads worked fine for me up to earlier this week.

The licence fee thing is pretty old fashioned.
I have never been convinced that the 'detector vans' exist. I had no TV licence for about 18 years and never got so much as a letter much less a visit.
Now that so many people get their BBC channels via Sky, cable etc rather than old style TV ariels on the roof I would have thought that the BBC ought to be getting the on sellers to pay them and then collect from the subscribers. Much easier.
I read in the Times yesterday that the BBC have admitted they have no power to stop people watching catch up content online...!
Rather like retailers whining about us shopping overseas so that they cannot overcharge us, this smacks of technology overcoming the old guard.

I've been getting a popup on the BBC apps asking me if I have a TV licence - I just click yes and carry on. Perhaps that's their policing method?

I had the popup a couple of times as well. Haven't seen it for awhile.
I like the BBC. It is an important part of my viewing. If too many people use catch-up, the whole thing will collapse eventually. I would much rather pay to keep it going.
