I'd like to know what the actual basis for the decision was.

From the way NZ Cricket chair talked, it sounded like the board went with Spark because they considered it the better platform. I didn't hear them mention that they would be getting more money than the Sky offer. I didn't hear any concern for those who will find it most difficult to shift to or add on Spark Sport.

I think that NZC will lose a lot of their long-term viewers - I know some beneficiaries/superannuitants that won't be able to make the shift to Spark because of the additional cost. NZC might see more "customers" but there will be a lot of cricket fans aggrieved because of the new hurdles.

I wonder how many $80+ a month Sky subscribers realise they can get both Sky Sports Now + Spark Sports for less $.

Sky with Sport is about $95. Spark Sport is $20. The additional cost is Sky, not streaming

Disclosure, I have both and like both

Not correct, sky with sports is "sky starter" @ $26 + "sky sports" @ $32, total of $58

Fair to say there is a lot riding on Sky renewing rugby rights and you know Spark is coming hard for that too.

Plus $15 - $20 for mysky / mysky+.

If you go the full online streaming route, then you have the freedom to choose when you want to subscribe either / both services. No fixed 12 month contracts. Potentially actually saving money.

For me, spark getting the cricket is awesome. Ondemand sport is the future. One thing that annoyed me about sky sat box mysky. If you forgot to set the recording, then you missed the game and no ondemand option.

Maybe the decision is based around pissing off as many NZ based fans as possible so they go to the actual games?

You could achieve more by giving it to Sky who have 900,000 who don't have it?

My gut feel is that NZC see streaming as the future, easy to get setup, cheap to setup, and there arent 900,000 who cannot recieve it. In a year or so sport streaming will be normal, so they are opting in now.

It would be such a different reaction if either Sky or Spark had spoken to foxtel in au, asked who and how much for their Kayo streaming platform and then got the same here, or paid a fee to Foxtel to license a copy for NZ.

Flawless sports streaming, watch live or from the start of an event, split screen if you are so inclined (I had the ABs and the league both playing at the same time just for fun), all games available on demand. It really is the gold standard of what sports streaming is capable of. I know the aussies are always claiming "to be the best in the world" at whatever it is they are doing, but in this case, its hard to argue against it. Launches from appletv app just like any other streaming service (I assume there is android too, never looked) and is 1080p.

If spark can get close to emulating that, then they are on to a winner

This is great. I know a mad cricket fan who can’t use Spark sport because their home internet isn’t up to scratch, however the only way they get TV is via satellite. They don’t have Netflix, Lightbox or any streaming service, but rely on sky to be able to watch anything decent on TV. There is no cellphone reception at this place and they managed to ADSL at 256kb/s about 3 years ago.

I guess if Sky does collapse, there is going to be a proportion of NZers who are going to be left behind when it comes to entertainment.

True, same as if Sky had all sport, not everyone can afford it, 900,000 dont have it

First me, once sky abandoned the fibre based streaming box it was all over.

Over the last year, more and more people are streaming with services such as Netflix and Amazon and Disney+.

Fibre is the only way 4k is coming to sport.

Just like how some people moaned about move from tvnz to sky for sports but then got over it as the ?decades have passed, a similar thing will happen with move from sky satellite to streaming. Life moves on.

I wonder how much if Tokyo Olympics is going to be on sky in true 1080 compared to being streamed in 4k ?8k in japan.

But for those that don’t have it, it is their choice not to have it. They have the choice whether or not to pay for it.

These people I’m talking about have no choice anymore. They can’t whistle up the hundreds of thousands of dollars to run a fibre line to their place, nor will they ever have rural broadband anywhere close to where they need it.

So what will their options be when Sky goes?
