Does anyone know if there is any client that can bitstream Apple movies' Dolby Atmos to home theatre please? By bitstream, I don't mean Dolby M.A.T. (i.e. Dolby Atmos over LPCM). I mean Atmos over DD True HD or DD Plus. Thanks.

I went over my $10 limit for an iTunes movie this week, but I've been waiting for a price drop on Bad Boys For Life. Its $12.99 for a limited time, so I grabbed it. The physical release is HDR10/DTS:X, but the iTunes stream is Dolby Vision/Dolby Atmos.

I also bought an old favourite in HD; Speed for $4.99, so I managed to stay under my $20 weekly spend 🤑

Anyone else bought anything this week?

I got A Quiet Place a while ago. It’s got a fantastic Atmos track. Not “in your face” audio, but a subtle use of the overheads.

I’ve been keeping an eye out for a deal on the Lord of the Rings extended editions. $39.99 atm, which is a lot cheaper than the DVD boxset I bought ~15 years ago. It looks like there is a 4K release coming soon.

The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies are reportedly coming to 4K UHD this year, about October according to the rumours.

Apparently they will be released in both the Theatrical and Extended Editions. Warner have not confirmed anything yet, so I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

My Marantz Receiver says “Dolby Atmos” when I’m playing a DV/DA title from my AppleTV4K. As I understand it, it’s a DD+ stream (not DD THD). The receiver does show “Multichannel PCM” if that’s all its getting. Is that what you mean by Dolby M.A.T. where the ATV does the decoding and then passes the LPCM to the receiver? Beyond that, I can’t comment on what is actually delivered.

Like the XBox One, the Apple TV 4K apparently delivers Dolby Atmos over LPCM (aka Dolby MAT). My Sony receiver shows "Dolby Atmos - Linear PCM" with the Xbox One. I'm wondering if there are any devices that bitstream the raw DD+ with Atmos metadata, or whether the clients are required to decode it and output DA over LPCM. I'm guessing the latter.

Audio 9/10, Picture 8/10. Wasn't quite as sharp as some movies Ive watched in 4K but good none the less.

Movie of the Week: Friday 7 August

Blinded by the Light @ $0.99 Rental or $9.99 Buy (HD/Dolby Digital Plus 5.1)

Javed is a Pakistani teenager who experiences racial and economic turmoil while living in Luton, England, in 1987. He writes poetry as a way to escape the intolerance of his hometown and the stubborn views of his traditional father. When a classmate introduces him to the music of Bruce Springsteeen, Javed sees parallels between the singer's powerful lyrics and his own working-class environment. Springsteen's melodies soon inspire Javed to find his own voice and follow his dreams.

Anyone who is looking to build their iTunes Collection can get some great deals on Movie Bundles for a limited time.
