Imagine if Sky put their prices up by this percentage. The outrage would cause riots :)

It would have, 5 or 6 years ago when Sky had a quasi-monopoly position. Now I doubt it would raise a shrug from most. Unless you are fanatical about a couple of the sports codes they still have locked up, it's a crowded marketplace for entertainment and there are plenty of other options if any individual provider ceases to represent value for money.

And that's what everyone wanted, competition...

Netflix getting up to Sky starter price now, and they don’t even have to install any equipment.

But at least Netflix is still free of advertising.

If only it was more like music streaming, where features + pricing are the differentiators, rather than content (but yes, I do know the economics of film/TV are very different to music).

Although the marketplace with competition is still far superior than the SKY quasi-monopoly, at least you can rotate between the services to get the content you want - even if true competition would be superior.

With Netflix/Amazon/Disney etc, a price increase is more acceptable in our house.  Sky regurgitates a lot of rubbish or outdated content.  Outside of sport, there is nothing consumed on their format.

Netflix hikes NZ pricing i wonder if this would affect Sparks bundle?

If the bundle price was to increase we'll be seriously looking at it. The lack of offering compared to overseas vs cost makes it just not worth the bother IMO.

It's great, isn't it?  Up to 2010 I was paying Sky TV around $70 per month for little added value over FTA broadcast TV.  Now with Netflix and other streamed services such as TVNZ, total outlay is around $25 per month (inc DNS4ME) - that's $6000 saved so far, minus the $500 or so I paid to buy a DVB-T recorder.  I have better quality programming to watch, without advertising, at a lower price.

What a great way to take advantage of the global situation at the moment! Loading new customers then increasing the price sure will sit well with investors, I better get onto buying their shares to offset the extra costs!

Side note, NFLX shares increased 3.3% over the past 5 days.

$18.50 for standard is getting up there. Wonder how high they can push it before the price outweighs the convenience?

Netflix offers great value for money if you consider that five users can (theoretically) share the cost of a single subscription. Still beats Freeview for content.

I'm not sure I've ever met an actual Netflix account holder - seems everyone I know with Netflix is using someone else's account. :)

Haven’t met me then! I’ve never even thought about sharing an account. With a family, the multiple users is so valuable to separate out content between individuals, plus get recommendations that are at least somewhat meaningful.

I can totally get that for many households a Netflix sub may be hard to afford and increases only make that more difficult, however for many on this forum I doubt it’s so much an affordability issue that’s behind the complaints but rather a perceived sense of value for money.

Once the price is hiked, my family will be paying a total of $25 a month for the 4K plan.

That’s 83c a day.

An increase of 11c a day.

Wow, may have to extend the mortgage to afford that…

Possibly although I would assume streaming to five different I.P.'s simultaneously would be the main attraction ....

Example.... my parents have their own profile under a NF account belonging to my sister.  My sister lives in California. :D.

I'm talking about within my immediate family as in those, living in the same house - me, partner, kid 1, kid 2, plus another for my partner and me combined for content we watch jointly. Five accounts used easily!

I know what both of you are talking about, one is breaking the terms and conditions and people living in same house are within terms and conditions.

I thought it was four streams at once, not five. Anyway not everybody needs multiple streams, and it’s not fair to lump the 4K in with that, if it’s the multiple streams that up the price.

Yes I can afford the $25, but when are these increases going to stop, as they are all big ones percentage wise.

At end of day there’s only so much that can watch, Disney $13 a month (year contract), and Prime Video $8 a month are better value proposition for me and both supply max quality at those prices.

Edit: Max of 5 profiles, but only 4 can stream at same time.
