Well that remains a moot point

There are Netflix subscribers in NZ who are NOT breaking the Netflix T&C.

I have friends from the US who are living in NZ. They have had a Netflix account for years and used the same account in the US. Just because they now in NZ it does not mean they are breaking the Netflix T&C.

I dont think your ISP has the right to question you about your access to an overseas site and then make their decision based on their own conclusion that you are breaking the Netflix T&C.

If there are some genuine people here in NZ that are entitled to use the service then the ISP has no right to deny access to that service.

Whether you are a us citizen, resident etc is irrelevant. If you access it from Nz you are breaching terms and conditions.


Nobody said the ISP has the right to block certain sites, I am just saying that they comcom will not have much sympathy if your complaint is about accessing a service that you shouldn't be able to access anyway.

The transparent proxy can affect other things too.

Maybe one should start looking at the disadvantages of the proxy and how it can affect other services.

I recall about a year or two ago Snap had major problems with Youtube buffering. And it was all related to the transparent proxies.

Edit: Thanks for the quote on the T&C. I had no idea about that.

Telecom have just supplied me with an IP that doesn't go via the proxy.

I'll test it tonight and report back how it goes with all the devices.

Huge thanks to the Telecom guys on here for helping sort this for me.

I have a Roku 3 assesiing Netflix via Unotelly (UnoDNS). Telecom is my ISP.

I have had Netflix for a week and have only had 1 good evening of watching Netflix. Most of the time it stops playing and shows the percentage sign (usually stops at 25%) and typically gives up with the having trouble viewing ... etc. message.

If I run my Desktop (Upstairs) PC directly connected to the Vigor120 Modem / TP-Link 1043ND Router then speedtest.net says Down: 8.22, Up: 0.96, Ping 25ms.
If I run my MacBook Air (Mid 2013) [Family Room] connected to a TP-Link AV200 Wireless N Powerline Extender, then speedtest.net says Down:8.26, Up: 0.97, Ping: 28ms.
If I run my MacBook Air (Mid 2013) [Family Room)] connected wirelessly via the AV200, then speedtest.net says Down: 8.24, Up: 0.99, Ping: 29ms.

Surely, the latter two speedtest.net results are enough to stream Netflix? In fact, there is little difference between the 3 scenarios.





Can you try another DNS unblocking provider such as Tunlr.net other than unotelly? It could be that unotelly is overloaded.

how did it go?!


I only managed to test the Roku 3 using getflix DNS and performance wasn't much improved to the point where the Roku can be relied upon.

I'm out tonight but will try different DNS services tomorrow night and see if that makes a difference.

I have a friend who uses Netflix via HTPC on Vodafone cable so I'll lend him the Roku and see how it performs for him too.

I got an email from Telecom and they changed my IP Address a second time.

Anyway Netflix streaming via all my devices (even the Roku) is now AWESOME! The devices don't crash or timeout and everything is running in sweet, sweet HD.

Thanks Telecom and especially the guys on here who helped me get it sorted.

This now confirms it is their proxy. 

To all Telecom ADSL/VDSL you might want to get static ip and bypass proxy to be able to take advantage of superHD.

I'd be keen to remove my reliance on VPN if possible.

I'd definitely be keen on this too. NetFlix is mostly good for us, but buffering and stream quality degradation is reasonably common.

I just received an email from Telecom saying they will no longer offer static IP's that bypass the cache for streaming services as they are in very short supply and are not the primary purpose of statics.

With this in mind perhaps it's worth asking the Telecom guys here if they could implement a feature (similar I believe to what other ISP's do) where you can turn off the cache at a control panel? Or have Telecom divert any requests to Netflix outside the cache?

I don't know if any of this is feasible as I'm not a network person.

just move to other provider! would be better...
so far these are the providers that can do superhd
BigPipe (my provider atm after nightmare transition with Telecom - to be fair it was chorus issue as well)
Slingshot
Snap
Orcon (I believe they are not using proxy as well)
