Amazing that they still sell black and white licenses for a fraction of the colour one. Shows how slow they are with their laws. I suppose you could set your phone to black and white, and buy that if you want to get it a lot cheaper.

So, I wonder how they are going to qualify whether you have one or not. Is it just by providing your address?

I appreciate that the BBC are trying to make the best of a hopelessly outmoded model, but these rules make it sound like they have no concept of modern technology. Does this mean you can watch catch-up on your 17-inch laptop as long as you know someone with a license and run it from the battery? Maybe you could have a full-size TV running from an inverter or a solar panel? Even knowing what the BBC is trying to achieve here, the rules don't make any sense. They will collapse the first time someone challenges them in court.

Thats right, it's like they have never heard of portable USB charger packs. Very poorly thought out rules....

If you have lived in UK, you will see how bad their bureaucracy and laws are. You think they are bad here, they are worse in the UK. This is the country that kneecapped itself with Brexit.

Can't really compare a country of 64 million on a smaller island with 4 million in NZ. Brexit will probably lead to less bureaucracy, not more. Seems a move in the right direction to me - who wants to be ruled by Brussels bureaucrats.

I think the BBC is an old model. It probably needs to be slimmed down with cuts in excessive executive and talent fees. They tried the offshore pay service and got complaints from the content providers so it was withdrawn. I suspect a user pays type service is on the way. People currently pay the equivalent of $NZ25 a month for quality tv. As more people watch their TV online it makes sense to offer this model. And of course they make money by selling content offshore as well. They probably need to start charging Sky to re-broadcast their channels too.

Hmm, I'm hoping not but all of a sudden I can't access iPlayer on anything at all so I wonder if things are kicking offNetflix style? Smart TV, iPad, nada. Anyone else having issues via dns4me?

There are still 10,000 people using them although I don't think it's entirely clear how many of them may be cheating

Incidentally, I'm fairly sure you can't set your phone to black and white and comply with the licence terms

As for the charging thing, it's weird and as others have mentioned still has issues (e.g. portable chargers) but I can understand their dilemma if person X would say "it's actually my friends tablet/laptop/whatever (even though it's always in my home, covered under my contents insurance, I paid for it....)". Of course as per the black & white thing the system does rely a lot on honest anyway but still I guess it's a simple way of trying of getting round the complexities both in law and in people's minds of how to define which address needs the licence for the device.

Nominally they could enforce black & white viewing in the apps with a black and white licence and allow it, but I doubt they will. Actually they could also reject black and white licences in the apps too but again I expect they aren't going that complicated even if it would be relatively trivial if they had a smart system.

I wish they would post known issues like that on their notifications page.
I think that was the night I had trouble with iplayer.
I don't mind that they get occasional issues - they always fix them - just let me know!
