If you invested $200,000,000 into a product that had no foreseeable way of being consumed by the public through the medium it was designed for, you'd price it accordingly to get a return on your investment too. Arguably they can reach more people with Disney+ than in cinemas, but people aren't used to paying for a new release movie so the pricing is going to be variable for a while until the market dictates where it should sit. Same as it did with music streaming vs paying for individual tracks vs buying a CD, and other streaming services in comparison to physical media.

I think you'll find the other studios looking at this to see how it pans out. If successful we'll see other studios releasing first run movies online. A lot of theater chains in the US are not looking good financially thanx to Covid and other things. The studios in the US have now been allowed to buy theaters again to stop them from going bankrupt something that was banned in the 1950s.

Trolls World Tour was very successful for Universal. This is the way of the future, it'll take a while for the business model to work out.

Some people will complain about being on fire, others will whinge at the ones who come to put it out. Can't please all the people all of the time, but I think Disney have struck a reasonable balance between getting a return from those that like to see things immediately and don't mind paying more for the privilege, versus those that are happy to wait.

$40 seems steep but as others have said, no different than a blu-ray (well, 4k?).

Its not a movie I'm itching to watch,so will happily wait until whenever its available with my subscription on Disney+, but if it was something I was more inclined to watch (latest Bond for example), then I'd at least consider ponying up for a family viewing.

Not just the ticket price, cost of getting there, additional time taken for getting there and back, food and snacks are much pricier at the cinema vs my fridge, I have no need to fit screening times around other activities.

Hell, the ticket price could be free and I would still not want to go to the cinema.

I never go to the cinema these days. I have an excellent Home Cinema for watching movies.

When I did go, it was usually with my two boys, and we always called into the supermarket on the way, and filled our pockets with lollies before entering 😂

I'm the opposite. I also have excellent home cinema, JVC projector, surround sound audio system.

However, it is still great fun going to our new cinema complex , buying popcorn and drinks, and seeing a great movie. Although, we save the cinema for only the best movies that have great visuals and sound. Although, our family of 5 cost over $150 to see starwars.

I don't see the point of going to the cinema to watch a comedy. The visuals and audio just don't matter. Has to be an action move usually.

We have some possible early numbers for Mulan. Apparently Mulan did 33.5M over a 4 day period on Disney+. While Tenet which was a theatrical release only did 20M opening weekend in the U.S. Also factor in Disney gets to keep 100% of that 33.5M while Warner Bros has to split that 20M Tenet made with theaters and what not. Its looking good for Black Widow coming to Premier Access if these numbers are legit.

I have a friend who uses a UK Disney + account and she watched Mulan for 12 pounds - about $23 Kiwi pesos.

Donnie Yen and Jet Li are always awesome but i sort of wished they upped the ante with the fight scenes and amount of violence.

hehehe i had the same sentiment... but this is disney's live action version of what is most remembered as an animated feature film. i do not recall seeing a single drop of blood in the battles!

as far as pricing goes, just right for families with kids... not sure how many, who would have seen this on a date night out, would cough up as you won't quite get the same experience.

I watched Mulan in glorious 4k/HDR on the weekend. Had never seen the animated versions or any familiarity with the story. Really enjoyed it! Stunning NZ scenery

The UK price was £19.99 which is pretty much the same as the NZ price.

I think I would rather wait till I can watch mulan without the extra $39.99, especially with all the controversy surrounding the movie. I'm worried that it won't live up to my expectations!
