As far as I can tell that only gives access to Mulan on 4th September. Price is showing in Disney plus applic, with offer to watch trailer so think that’ll be NZ price.

Also Disney Plus Subscription required on top, making it around $50 lol.

Don’t know how long the wait is to watch  without the extra 39.99, but I’ll be giving it a pass. Maybe Disney thinks this will make them more money then a cinema release, and then streaming later.

I guess it’s the same price as some of the PPV stuff on Sky.

I hope it works because it is rumoured Black Widow is the next cab off the rank. As long as it’s 4K/Dolby Atmos then 5 of us will happily watch it (Black Widow) at home.

Black Widow is the only reason I want this to be successful. I just want to finally see it. Not sure id pay $40 for Mulan but would for Black Widow, The Kingsman or The New Mutants.

Some of those I’d rather pay $10-$13 to see on the big screen at movies, then $40. Only go to movies with one other person so would be cheaper as well as better experience. Guess with theatres not going in a lot of countries they are trying something different.

Even though interested in Black Widow will wait for the extra $40 charge to drop off, unless get a group of four or more who want to share costs and watch at one persons place.

That's exactly it and why movies on Premiere Access are going to be $40. Their compensating for the fact that they're expecting more than 1 person will likely be watching. So for a single person yea its a bit of a rip off. But for 2 or more people its pretty reasonable. Its about $40 for 2 adults at the theater.

Also worth pointing out that the $40 "premium" for Mulan will give you continual access for as long as your stay subscribed to Disney+; so multiple viewings included.  Unlike going to the cinema...

Not for the the theatres I go to. Looked up Telnet at Hoyts Riccarton $13.50 or $12 if a paid Hoyts member, which costs $12 per year. Also that $12 gives one free movie of the week.

Extreme screen is $15 if paid member or otherwise $16.50. Then there’s movie of week, which have to wait for movie to be in it’s last screening week basically and it’s $10.00 if paid member.

Edit: May not have to be paid member to Hoyts Rewards to get discounts, may just get bigger reward points. Point is though tickets are no where near $20 each.

As pointed out, not a good deal for single people who only want to watch a movie once.

But Mulan's target market is families, which would normally have adults and children attending, not to mention transport and snacks etc which would definitely go well over $40 very quickly, making this an OK price, not to mention this option means they can watch the film repeatedly if they want to.

Looks like they set the price at new release DVD pricing - wonder if in future they would consider a lower price option for a single viewing, which might make more sense for the Black Widow audience.

Think about the economics here and you'll realise Disney is sacrificing volume but compensating on price.

At the movies Disney pays c50% of the ticket price to the theatre. Other distribution costs are relatively low.

For retail the retailer is taking a margin plus costs of manufacturing and distribution to create physical product and get it into distribution channels.

For streaming it's the cost of carriage by a CDN.

At this stage it's probably setting the price relatively high before testing the elasticity. Easier to drop prices in the future. Very difficult to increase prices (and justify).

Not just the ticket price, cost of getting there, additional time taken for getting there and back, food and snacks are much pricier at the cinema vs my fridge, I have no need to fit screening times around other activities.

Hell, the ticket price could be free and I would still not want to go to the cinema.

I never go to the cinema these days. I have an excellent Home Cinema for watching movies.

When I did go, it was usually with my two boys, and we always called into the supermarket on the way, and filled our pockets with lollies before entering 😂

Disney briefly published the date for Mulan being added to the regular / included-with-subscription library as December 4th, then promptly removed it. I was thinking about the premier access since we're a family of 4 who were planning on seeing this in the cinema back before the pandemic, but if it's going to be "free" just three months later, I may reconsider.

The only time i watch a movie at the local Cinemas is when its showing at the local IMAX in Auckland here. Im a bit fussy when it comes to sound/image and the IMAX setup is definitely up there. Tickets are usually at least $20 each but worth it in my opinion for the experience when watching a blockbuster film. My Home theatre trumps the IMAX in everything bar image size,so streaming something like Mulan would be very tempting. I loved the animated version so am mulling over paying the big ticket price for myself and the missus to watch this newer reimagining. Be interesting to see how the Image/Sound will stack up for their premium product.
