Just received:

CallPlus (including Slingshot, Orcon and Flip) and ByPass Network Services today announced the Global Mode service will be withdrawn in New Zealand on 1 September 2015.

The removal of Global Mode forms part of a settlement which sees SKY, TVNZ, Lightbox and MediaWorks drop the legal action against CallPlus and ByPass.

Further details of the settlement are confidential and will be the subject of a formal Court order.

From Sky:

The legal proceedings against “Global Mode” service providers have been settled. As a result, from 1 September 2015, the “Global Mode” service will not be available to any person for use in New Zealand.

So, Global Mode is illegal now? Or is this still just "Unknown"?

Sidenote: Due to all this coverage of Global Mode, I did a lot of reading / research and I have discovered many new things. It is sooooo easy to access overseas content, much of it free (legally I mean, that was previously geoblocked) and you don't even need Global Mode. In fact, it's so easy to get much better content, at much cheaper prices, it's almost ridiculous. More people should do it. Goodbye all the low choice, overpriced NZ services - Me and my money are outta here.

I'm terribly butt-hurt over this. Not keen on going back to a paid un-block service.
At least this makes switching to another ISP that little bit easier.

Meh. The paid services are pretty damn cheap, and offer better flexibility anyway.

What this decision does tell us is that it would be far more prudent to parallel import our content WITHOUT bragging about how we're doing it :-)

Don't forget that M2 purchased callplus.

M2's view on this could be a lot different from the old owners etc of callplus/slingshot

I should imagine most of the people that were using GM won't have much trouble still accessing all the content as before.

I will carry on doing what I do with my systems and services. so no change here.

exactly. If a consumer isn't even willing to pay what, $5 per month to get this sort of service, which I might add is significantly better than global mode anyway, then clearly they were never going to be particularly lucrative for the media companies even if they did spend their money in NZ.

When it was all under the radar, just us geeks using unblock-us etc and word of mouth spreading how to do it, nobody cared.

As soon as Slingshot etc started crowing about it spending $$ on marketing it, that was when media companies sat up and took notice.

It just annoys. It has not settled that there is nothing wrong with parallel importing digital content. So the idiots that call people netflix pirates will still go on about that.

I think it will just affect the non tech people that found out they could get US netflix without having to do anything.
Anyone that knows anything about it knows that there are other ways of getting the content.

you mean every other Smart DNS service out there?, that have been around since before global mode?, will still be around when global mode ceases?, and works better than global mode with better support?
