richms: It just annoys. It has not settled that there is nothing wrong with parallel importing digital content. So the idiots that call people netflix pirates will still go on about that.

we should take this as a very good outcome.

The fact that the settlement means Callplus are withdrawing global mode should tell you who was likely to win in court (i.e. not callplus).  If callplus thought they would really win, they could EASILY have afforded to fight it in court. The only reason to settle in this manner is if they thought they would lose.

so the fact that it didn't get to court is a really good sign.  If it did, and callplus lost (which seems very likely considering the setllement) then there could have been all sorts of legal ramifications for plenty of other services.

Reccomendations?

I primarily use global mode for bbciplayer and itv, the odd bit of hulu.

Would like something for abc iview if possible too.

Prior to global mode I had stealthy pro but it was pretty average tbh.

natlukros: Perhaps somebody else, non aligned with an isp could offer global mode,

Guess ill have to sort out a vpn now.

A lot of services already do it. DNS4ME, UnoTelly, Unblock-US, etc, etc.

We use Unotelly. They support a metric crap tonne of services, but I'm not sure whether you're fully catered for. They have a 7 day trial, and a Geekzone discount available too. May be worth taking the trial for a spin.

as an interesting speculative aside,  I assume that by having global mode on 'their' network, it meant Callplus could easily cache content from Netflix US etc rather than it costing them international bandwidth. (no way could they actually afford to have a large proportion of their base streaming 3-7Mbps HD content from the states at peak times)

If they can't do that anymore, and people switch to unblock-us, unotelly, or VPNS etc,  that will, I believe, totally bypass any Callplus cache.  So this could mean Callplus are in for a rude shock on international bandwidth costs?

I don't know enough about network engineering to know if that is true or not.  Anybody care to comment?

A fair decision. Lightbox spends a huge amount on content and at least now has a fighting, but still not great, chance at survival.

Btw, I'm really enjoying Sense 8 on Netflix NZ

Best go after the warehouse then. Some of that content is available there on DVD.

Anti-competitive practices + legalised blackmail.

I disliked Sky before - closed my Sky account 3 months ago - now I dislike them even more.

When Orcon and Slingshot send a letter to their customers about global mode being removed, I hope they say you could use services like unotelly instead

I'm with Flip which doesn't support DNS services and my router doesn't have vpn capability.  Hmmmm, need to do some further research on other broadband providers I guess.  I used ibvpn through my ipad, but want a smart tv solution.

I know, i only resigned with orcon for global mode, 12 months more of a pants call centre for nothing. Guess next time im looking for a isp it will be based on where their call centre is located rather than if it had global mode or not.

reread the last page or two of this thread, I read at least 4 names of services that are more fully featured than the global mode.  They were around before global mode and will be around afterwards, and they have support, region switching, apps for region switching, more services and are harder to shut down as most are in weird countries.

I'm not sure I understand the reasoning for leaving an ISP just because it doesn't give you this one aspect for free (normally about $5) - IMO seems a short sighted reason to leave.

I went over to a paid proxy a long time ago so do not miss Global Mode. However, what concerns me about this is what may lie further down the track, especially with the IP provisions in that bloody TPPA if it goes through as now seems likely. All of you who are saying this does not affect you may want to reflect on that. Do not for a moment think this is the last you will hear from the gang of four on this subject. Now that they have got their way with Global Mode, expect them to start lobbying against DNS proxies and VPNs. I don't see how these could be closed down altogether, but I bet they can be made much, much harder to use.

Wouldnt suprise me if part of the extortion settlement has something that they cant mention the existance of other services that do exactly the same thing. That is why us as internet freedom supporters need to let everyone know that there is a better way.

I kinda hoped that SS and orcon would have put something out ahead of this advising of the other services incase there was a gag on them about mentioning others.
