We also need to see an end to these content service/hardware manufacturer exclusivity partnerships, such as the one between TV3 and Samsung. To paraphrase Helen Lovejoy, "Won't somebody please think of the consumers!"

I think that is more of a case that law needs to catch up with this new technology.

Dragging this topic a little off topic. TVNZ have a technology agreement with Samsung too (and Apple) which, in theory, limits On Demand to a select few devices. It's a very bad thing for consumers as it locks out hardware choice, it's also a very bad thing for advertisers as a huge chunk of their potential market is being shut out. I would have thought they would be up in arms about this and demanding the broadcasts be done in HTML5 making them platform independant.

It was probably in return for Samsung paying for development of the Applications

Issue is HTML5 does not have DRM in it currently - only in late September 2013 the W3C HTML Working Group decided that Encrypted Media Extensions, a form of DRM, was "in scope" and will potentially be included in the HTML 5.1 standard, and the media company will not let TVNZ stream none encrypted programs. TVNZ can only stream to approved setup that media company say are ok - so far, that Samsung android & apple on the tablet approved list, if other android tablet maker want in then they got to get their hardware approve by the media company.

It always worked on devices. You seem to indicate that using a proxy service like Unblock, it now works on port 80 or did I read your post wrong?

A VPN will always work as you noted.

That's the final hurdle for me to come back to cable.

The other was getting the T-Box configured with my PVR and I think I have that sorted.

I saw a Netflix van parked outside my house yesterday.

I was just about to ask the guys in it some questions about actually getting decent content deals here in NZ and breaking our cosy pay TV monopoly, when I became distracted by a flock of pigs flying backwards.

Not 100% confirmed until we hear it from Netflix.

Not a confirmation at all. That's just a blog post citing the same link as the OP posted here as the source.

SaRaCeNz: Yeah- but in reality, any streaming service in NZ needs to get iTunes on side so they can push out an app to ATV. Otherwise I suspect they are wasting their time.

Or partner with a similar device manufacturer (Roku, WD Live etc) to provide your average technically illiterate consumer with a relatively easy way to get their wares onto the TV. But it needs to have decent quality. That is where Quickflix really failed for us. We used their PS3 app (as that was the best option for us), and the picture quality was awful.

We also need to see an end to these content service/hardware manufacturer exclusivity partnerships, such as the one between TV3 and Samsung. To paraphrase Helen Lovejoy, "Won't somebody please think of the consumers!"

My Sony Bluray, Samsung TV both have Netflix apps on them, as do my Android Tablets, XBox and WDTV Live ... all work very well with UnblockUs DNS set up on the router. Never had a problem and as I use a central cupboard and can stream to  4 TV's you can watch the programmes in any room (or on a tablet)... still easiest to watch via the WDTV

Some programmes are noted as SD others as HD and the difference is notable

Of note it looks like Netflix also offer a DVD/Blu ray option in the US ... latest releases look to go via that first (think Fatso)
