After this, all units would still have the same content but would be sold out of China and cost would vary.

Part of me definitely feels like these stories about My Box would've been better off had they been assigned to the technology writers vs the business. Every part of that statement feels completely ludicrous.

SKY Television today welcomed the decision of the Christchurch District Court that marketing claims made by Fibre TV were misleading and deceptive, and that the sale of its ‘pre-loaded’ set-top boxes amounts to copyright infringement.

Pre-loaded boxes are often called ‘Kodi boxes’, because they use Kodi software platforms. The unlawful aspect is using software plugins or add-ons that enable people to find and stream pirated content.

Using such add-ons, Fibre TV positioned itself as having “all of the content with none of the fees”, including Netflix, SKY movies and a range of sport content. Fibre TV customers paid good money for their boxes, and many would have been led to believe that it was above board.

Judge MacAskill found that the claims were misleading and in breach of the Fair Trading Act, and that the sale of the boxes breached copyright.

“It is great to have this matter clarified, as we were concerned that New Zealanders were buying these boxes under the false impression that they were legitimate – it simply wasn’t true,” said SKY Television’s General Counsel Sophie Moloney.

“Piracy is an ongoing problem for everyone in the content and creative sectors. Recent research shows that almost a third of New Zealanders are pirating, some as regularly as weekly, with one in ten saying it’s the way they ‘normally’ access content.1

“It also found that 3% of New Zealanders are regularly using Kodi boxes or Kodi software to access TV, movies and sport. That’s over 100,000 Kiwis, some of whom will have been duped into believing it was legitimate because of the marketing promises made by suppliers like Fibre TV.”

Kodi boxes are a growing problem around the world, but courts and lawmakers in many jurisdictions are taking steps like the decision from Judge MacAskill this week.₂

The court will now consider next steps for the Fibre TV promoters and their boxes, and SKY will participate in that process and await the decision.

“In the meantime, we just want to highlight to New Zealanders that ‘Kodi boxes’ like the Fibre TV ones breach copyright and do not have a legitimate place in our market.”

“There are so many ways to access legal content in New Zealand these days – on SKY, Lightbox, Netflix, TVNZ On Demand, ThreeNow, NEON, Stuff Pix, FAN PASS and FAN PASS Mobile, to name a few.”

“Our hope is that New Zealanders will want to play fair, and respect and value the people (be they actors, camera crew or All Blacks) who create the amazing content we want to keep seeing on our screens.”

Going out on a limb here, but if the Kodi box itself is illegal because it caches "content" then so are my Amazon Fire boxes, laptops, PCs, tablets and phones.

I did chuckle at this line, because it's also the problem - do they expect us all to subscribe to all of these to get a small amount of content from each? The delivery is too fragmented to work. On top of this each of the above sites has a different list of devices/TVs that they will work on.

Procrastination eventually pays off.

Neon, Fan Pass, and Fan Pass Mobile are all Sky SVoD services (also the only three in captial letters, despite not being acronyms)

hi,

I too recently purchased MyBox after chatting to company representative on MyBox web site. They assured me everything is fine and they are still operating. I have acted in good faith and based on information provided by company only to now get into situation of having to chase my order day after day. Chat on MYboxnz.com is not replying to my inquiries at all and number of emails sent to them proved to be fruitless as they are simply not replying. I have contacted 2 other business owned by same person and they simply don't want to get involved stating they are separate from My Box and they don't even want to pass the message to owner. I hope I won't have to fly to Hamilton to pay him a visit...you simply don't do this to people, assure them everything is OK and there will be no problems only to stop replying or ignore emails or messages.

You should object to their company being removed as they're clearly still trading... I'm sure that'd get their attention

As company is not officially removed yet I believe there is nothing to stop them trading. They have now removed chat box from My Box web site and no replies to my emails. Last communication was on 03/08 and My Box rep advised me item will be shipped Monday 06/08. I hope the they are honest and provide either item or refund.

Sadly, no. As per instructions in email it was deposit into bank account and I made it over the counter but still have receipt as proof. I acted in good faith and based on information received from My Box.

I'm keen to know a few of these. Being legal that won't involve VPN which is convenient, and happy to pay.

I'm not sure of the exact legalities, but I'm sure you could challenge their removal on the grounds that they're still trading and are about to be removed.

Why a problem with VPNs? They are not illegal. That makes them legal. Many content providers offer limited free episodes, along with locked ones. I like public service TV, such as PBS and ABC. The @apsattv Kodi streams work for some Australian FTA TV, even without geo-unblocking. There are many legal Kodi add-ons that provide heaps of content, especially in the areas of news and documentaries. Have you ever tried YouTube? You wouldn't believe how much good stuff you can find there, both paid and unpaid. Free films (with or without ads) on Tubi, Crackle, Pluto, popcornflix, classic cinema, snagfilms, SBS, etc.etc. Arts content and contemporary concerts on Arte, Euroarts, and many other places. Also Austin City Limits on YouTube. Most of this is free. There is plenty more. This is just off the top of my head. I don't have time to watch all the good stuff I can already choose from, never mind paid content.

Sadly, I am in the same situation. MyBoxNZ was super quick to provide invoice but as soon as I deposited the money they stopped all communication. No replies to my emails, chat box on their web site is ignoring me. I have lodgef scam report with CERT (government agency fighting cyber crime) and NetSafe. Hopefully, they will have means to stop this dodgy barstard from doing it to someone else.
