We live in a golden age though, so much good content is being produced.

For me it is still cheaper than Sky or Cable ever was, you don't have to put up with adverts, you can binge watch what you want when you want and you can start/stop subscription on a whim.

Even if the price is creeping towards $100 per month for subscribing to everything that is available, it is still light years better than the old model!

I'm curious to know what will happen with Sky and National Geographic given that its currently broadcast on Sky... I thought it was an aussie re-broadcast so I wonder whether this will cause issues and that Sky will lose National Geographic...

As a general watcher of content of different types, the breaking of content aggregators troubles me as to see what I want I need to subscribe to pretty much everything and probably still including Sky for things like Discovery etc. My partner doesn't care because she just binges on episodic shows and stays away from documentaries, news/reporting type programs, sports... I'm already spending substantial amounts for NEtflix, Lightbox, Spark Sport & Sky as a result of this breaking of aggregators.

Agree with 2nd above. Apart from everything else, much of the non-sports content on Sky basic has been fairly marginal filler stuff, with only a few channels worth paying for. The range and quality of content from a number of streaming services for a comparable amount of money still works out to much better value, and you have much greater choice. Sky coasted on their monopoly for too long and now they have been caught out.

yep, I am looking forward to that. Its a shame our local broadcasters only go for targetted platforms such as the Vu X etc. rather than targetting all Android TV units so its good that a major content provider is going for full support.

You may be reading too much into this. DisneyLife has been in the UK since 2015 (and Ireland since 2016 or 2017). It has been Disney's streaming service that includes box sets, movies etc. Disney and SkyUK have remained key partners in that market although it'll be interesting to see what Disney does with Comcast ownership of Sky.

Disney is very clear that it wants to maximise the value of its content - DTC and broadcast (both cable and FTA) will be considered different segments appealing to different groups. I imagine NatGeo is just treated as another property in the Disney empire, and profit maximisation through all channels will remain paramount.

That’s quite cunning having a one year subscription price, get two months free if don’t turn it off and on.

Hoping it’s not hold back by existing rights in NZ, be interesting to see what content they start with.

Wasn’t expecting to be one of first countries to get it.

Hopefully it will include ESPN+ in the Disney+ bundle. I believe ESPN has the worldwide rights to the NWSL so it will be good to see some US soccer.

dont hold your breath for ESPN+, pretty sure Sky has that sewn up and they do show US soccer

The announcement today for NZ was just for Disney+, not a bundle of any kind.

As always we get slightly screwed on the exchange rate Aussies getting it cheaper @8.99AUD=9.49NZD (as of today's exchange rate) not 9.99NZD that we will pay here.

Don't forget to factor in 10% vs 15% gst though. But even then, yes slightly more, but it just becomes marketing rounding.
