Read somewhere Duke was recently upgraded in the last couple weeks

Duke on Sky went from 576i, i.e., standard definition, to 1080i.

And just to add Duke is 50 frames per second, same as all broadcast TV over the air.

When I set ATV to 50Hz match frame rate, the streaming stuff at 60 Hz still looked fine, YouTube, Netflix etc, just at 60Hz the New Zealand streaming services were juddery.

Same with chromecast as well.

Pretty sure Duke on Freeview|HD is also 1080i not 1080p - possibly all the channels are? I've not looked.

For me on an older 1080p 55" Samsung the Duke picture was noticeably less sharp than the Spark Sport stream - I didn't find the frame rate difference noticeable, but the Spark Sport stream was night and day sharper.

Just goes to show how good the stream really is.

The 5.1 audio was pretty sweet on Duke though. 😜

I'm not interested in getting a 15% refund on the $60.00, how about a $2200 refund on the new TV I just purchased which is now useless as the games will probably end up being free on Duke

You didn't buy a $2200 TV because of SS, stop having a laugh. Getting fibre installed wasn't really a requirement but good you did it anyway. Thank the Govt for that being free too.

Why do the games being on Duke make your TV redundant? Hope you didn't buy a TV because it has smart TV apps..

I had it on pretty good authority that its only being transmitted to spark at 50fps and spark are upscaling it before sending it out... god knows where they are pulling 10fps from.

In conversation its often stated as 30/60. But if its 25/50 content its sent as that.

As far as I'm aware all the RWC content is actually 50.

I did a recording yesterday of the world satellite feed, and will upload a raw video .ts later so that you guys have something to argue about ;-)

or it showed how bad your Samsung TV is at deinterlacing.

All digital TV's are progressive displays so an interlaced source has to be de-interlaced first.

There are a few methods to deinterlace video. Different pros and cons for each.

MultiChoice subscribers were left seething on Saturday after its DStv Now streaming service collapsed at the start of the Springboks’ opening match in the 2019 Rugby World Cup.

The DStv Now service bombed out near the start of the pivotal game against New Zealand’s All Blacks. Viewers took to social media to criticise the broadcaster for the problems, which appeared to be mostly resolved in time for the second half of the game, which the Springboks lost 23-13.

The problem was reportedly caused by too many users trying to log onto the system for the first time. A MultiChoice spokesman promised to provide a full breakdown of the reasons for the problems on Monday.

Wasn't he the one at the last election promising that all NZ sport would be free?

A Spark source says company took this incredibly seriously, building a “situation room” with every combination of devices streaming simultaneously. For the first games, and the first 30 minutes of the All Blacks–Springboks game, it worked flawlessly. Then those watching started seeing “significant fluctuations in video frame rate quality”.

The source maintains that the platform has worked flawlessly, and believe they have subsequently tracked the problem down. My Spark source refused to name the provider, but The Spinoff understands it is industry giant Akamai. The source maintains that an “internet gateway got overloaded”, due in part to the game’s timing – Saturday night is already a moment of heavy streaming for New Zealand – and that the streams will be split over multiple gateways in future.

Several people on this thread have suggested that overloading is the problem, and now the above article says the same. Although Spark denies overloading was the cause, surely this is the most obvious reason for all the problems?

Incidentally, do you agree that wired high speed fibre internet should produce a better Spark Sport picture than that obtained using WiFi on a streaming device such as Apple TV?

The problems Spark encountered with the stream on Saturday night probably made Sky feel like all their Christmases have come at once - I bet to Sky it was a gift from the gods.
