Why do you need a US itunes account on Apple TV, I just change the region to US and all the apps appear. Unotelly DNS also programmed in...

When I set up our ecosystem over 12 months ago, the instructions I used stated it was necessary. It also has the upside of getting us access to all the US iTunes content, which is something we use regularly.

Have they released the full catalogue? Content is everything

Not yet. And when they initially announced, they used worrying language like "Game of Thrones Season One" when touting content. I get that they wouldn't have the current season as it airs on SOHO, but to only have the first season... that would be a bad misstep on their part.

Will Apple TV NZ/Aus get Netflix now? if so I might be tempted to finally get one.

That appears to be controlled by iTunes account region, so hopefully it should be as simple as allowing the Netflix app for our region.

We'll probably be sticking to our US based iTunes account, as we use our Apple TV for Hulu as well.

You don't. But I think that's what they meant by iTunes account region i.e. store location.

You do need a U.S. itunes account of you want to download the iOS app for Netflix though, so maybe that's why.

hairy1: I just heard John Fellet on Radio Live. Apparently Sky is a "Fast Follower" which I found to be an entertaining statement. Maybe they will pick up speed. Who knows.

Maybe Sky will drop their online price from $20 / month to the same as Netflix when  they start..

How do make payments to your U.S. iTunes account?

With my onesmart card.  So while itunes knows about it, it's not in itunes and netflix, and hulu.  Itunes can pay your subscriptions to neflix and hulu.

This is interesting but will it work as much as they think it will?

How will they get over the perception that people here will think that just because they have the rights to a 3rd party vendors product in the US that they automatically have it here? And not just the USA but between NZ and Australia.

And that a lot of potential customers listening to people talking about it or reading articles about Netflix think that they have access to a lot more stuff then they actually do?

The issue that NETFLIX don't have first broadcast rights to US FTA but people here think that they can watch on NETFLIX the same time it is on FTA in the USA?

And maybe the biggest being that a lot of their potential NZ customers already use the US version and will not change unless they get everything they did before at the same price?

If you want access to fresh, just-aired content then you want Hulu.

Netflix is great to catchup with programmes.

I had no idea you could do that. Thanks for the tip! Do you just plug in the number and it automatically debits the USD wallet?

I've only just recently signed up for Netflix using Unotelly and putting the DNS into my AppleTV. Netflix happily accepted my NZ Visa for payment, which I tried because I didn't want the hassle of trying to top up my US iTunes account using gift card resellers. I can see myself buying a lot more US iTunes content now :) I can't see me wanting to use the NZ Netflix unless their range of content is comparable to the US catalogue.

The exception to that, of course, is the excellent Netflix produced content such as House of Cards & Orange is the New Black.

Of course. And that's why I have *both* Netflix and Hulu, in addition to Amazon Instant Video for movies.

I am not going to get too excited about this yet, nearly all the implementation of these kinds of services in NZ have been some what poor.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

I hear you. We have Netflix, Hulu and Lightbox. Each bring a little something to the content table.

I maybe lucky but up till now I have paid for my Netflix account with a BNZ Globalplus card. Then I opened an ANZ Visa card and was able to switch to that. No need to use a US credit card, or even OneSmart.

And similarly for Hulu.

Staying in Wellington. Check out my AirBnB in the Wellington CBD.  https://www.airbnb.co.nz/h/wellycbd  PM me and mention GZ to get a 15% discount and no AirBnB charges.
