If Spark do aquire those rights, you can bet the monthly fee will at least double, or be a premium extra (like the RWC is). Those rights are not cheap.

or Sky will charge higher fee for filming (aren't they doing full cycle in NZ from ground to air the competition?) the events

Personally I would rather this than 4k 30fps, especially for fast moving sports.

Hopefully a decent amount of their content will be shot in 60fps, and hopefully they provide an android TV app.

Do you know what video codac has been chosen (HVEC?)

Yep; as it stands the HD streams are already entitlment free; i.e. if you do your own thing then you can get them without the HD ticket so it will be simply a matter of switching the boxes to HD and voila its done.

Now would be a good time to push Sky to decrypt the HD feeds of Tv1,2,3,prime

I'm slightly disappointed. I wanted to see a different approach to sport broadcasting, all we have here is bundled sports (at an OK price) delivered on another platform, one that is arguably more at risk of troubling the end user.

I would like to see tiers offered, something like this:

¢= a single event, e.g. Melbourne Grand Prix, Rally Finland etc.
$ = a single series subscription e.g. F1, Heineken Cup, Mitre 10 Cup etc.
$$ = a single sport subscription. Motorsport, Rugby, Football, etc.
$$$ = all sports they offer bundled.

That way, if I just want to watch F1, I pay a lesser amount. If I want to watch motorsport I pay a little more. And if I want all sports I would pay the premium. It would mean I could subscribe to motorsport, Mitre 10 Cup, and the NRL season.

I also wish we were in a world where exclusive rights weren't a thing and Sky and Spark could buy them. Whoever presents the best product gets the consumers...

Back in the real world, if Spark got the V8's, I think for $20 that would be a pretty decent motorsport package ignoring the other stuff in there.

Reality is that you pay for 1 sport and get a bunch more for nothing. Add more sports and its pretty likely that the price goes up (more content = more costs = higher price).

If there werent exclusive rights then the sum of the non-exclusive rights is less for the sporting bodies to receive. Not so palatable if you're a sporting body and you want the cash.

there has been plenty of opportunities for companies to get the rights but no one has , it is just to expensive , they would have to pay 30-40 million plus the costs of setting up the infrastructure to broadcast the games

I agree, I just wish it could be that way. I'm happy with the $20 offering for F1/F2/GP3/WRC. Add V8's and that would be super decent.

Perhaps one day sports will have to lower their prices as they compete directly with each other for viewers... A seperate issue, but I've watched a lot of different sports over the years and the production doesn't need to be 20 cameras, a super/ultra slow, a cable cam, a drone etc to be entertaining!

I've seen this comment a couple of times here on GZ. (F1 TV Pro for $50)... Presumably that's some super special discount coupon or reseller? Are you able to link it please? All I see (using a VPN to the US) is this...

Maybe another territory only charges $50 USD and doesn't have the monthly charge at all?

There is a US Discount code pre season giving 50% off the Pro Pricing - full year for USD$49.99 - of course you need US access and payment method. I was just making the point that $20 month is not that cheap if you don't want the other other sports or already have WRC+.

And for those of us with a US cc and access to a US address that would be the pre-season pricing. But it'll run out fast wont it, when the season proper starts (on Duke).

Thats the issue. Sports bodies wont do that. I watch F1 and MotoGP, they don't compete as I want both. Sky is an aggregator as is Spark now. They both pay for all rights, and as most of us want 1 or 2 or 4 sports we subsidise the others. But overall, its cheaper per sport. If the bundle was unbunded you might find the bundle is say $20 or each spore is say $15 or $12. That now seems mean, but the costs need to be recovered, and having multi sports works out cheaper. More expensive for a one sport watcher, but super cheap if you watch more than one sport. Imagine if you watched 5 of the sports that Spark offers. $4 per month for each, thats great.

I'm I the only one finding it odd - but not unexpected - that Spark Sport are offering RWC for a premium price? If Sky tried to do that, there would be rioting in streets! (yes rugby channel is a premium channel but all major rugby events are on Sky Sports)
