In view of this, I will cancel netflix and swap to the new disney channel when it starts.

I think disney will destroy netflix in the long run.

Nothing above PG13 Disney so highly doubt that lol. If HBO and that become more world wide then I expect Netflix to become a smaller player.

I expect Disney price to go up in a few years, it's great value for the catalog though. I'll subscribe and see how goes.

I think that Disney will be a suitable substitute for a minority; adults into Star Wars etc, kids... but it's certainly not going to be a Netflix replacement for many. That PG13 thing will certainly be a huge limiting factor!

I looked over the full list of content linked to from the Disney+ thread and found very little that interested me, and I know for sure my wife would be the same; my kids, on the other hand, would get something out of it. But, then again, there's heaps of content they watch on Netflix. So, unless a VOD service can provide a wide range of content to suit all in a household, I imagine it'll be more an additional service rather than a replacement.

I can see us paying for the occasional month of Disney (eg, in the holidays), but that's about it... Netflix, on the other hand, we get enough use to justify a continuous sub.

My main annoyance with Netflix is no support for 2K monitors in the premium product. 2nd is the price increase.

Disney is the majority owner of Hulu after the Fox buyout, FX are producing some exculsive content for Hulu under a new deal so it shows Disney are happy for it to remain as a more adult svod option and put money into both.

Yep, at the moment the Hulu part is not going world wide, only the Disney part.

so it’s not going to have a major effect on Netflix outside US until Disney makes all it’s content purchasable world wide.

Netflix raising prices again on 11th December

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/entertainment/news/article.cfm?c_id=1501119&objectid=12284075

I clicked on the above link and got the message below, has anyone else been told this is a fraudulent web page?

Fraudulent Web Page Blocked You attempted to access: https://redirect.viglink.com/?   This web page is a known fraudulent web page. It is highly recommended that you do NOT visit this page.

Visit Norton to learn more about phishing and internet security

Nope, FireFox 70.0.1 and reports latest one. There's no redirect, goes straight to nzherald site.

Thanks, I checked again and using Internet Explorer I still get the fraudulent web page blocked message from Norton (strange). But, I have just tried it on Google Chrome and there is no problem!

Anyway, I like Netflix for its original films and series etc but it doesn't have several of the better recent films that are available, for example, through Apple TV itunes movies. If you don't watch a lot of movies etc, I think it could be better to just hire and stream a couple of recent good movies a month, which aren't available on Netflix.

I think this is a really interesting strategic move by Netflix - sure, they need more money because they need to make more content to stay top etc etc.

But - the global price rises (it's not just in NZ) may be more about maintaining a 'share of pocket' than anything else - that plus acting as a disincentive for certain audiences to sub to multiple services (because affordability).

What I mean is that for various parts of their audience, this price rise will have different consequences :-

  • Some will stay on regardless of price (within reason) because they see the value
  • Others will subscribe to a basket of services - but will only spend a certain amount on the lot

    • i.e. lots in this thread saying they'll do Netflix +1, but not +n services
  • Others will see the price rise and immediately jump ship (but likely Netflix sees these as likely lost anyway)

The middle group are the important ones - Netflix need to make sure that in any basket of services, they're the ones that don't get dropped if that 'certain amount' is breached.

By upping the price, they consume more of that amount - potentially betting on their 'stickability' with multiple audience types (within families even) to remain front and center.

The problem I think Netflix have, is that in trying to be everything to everyone, they're spread too thin - the new services can easily target and beat Netflix in certain niches.

I am happy to pay a few dollars more for quality content, but lately Netflix (in particular the US) seem to be going for quantity over quality with lots of African and other foreign films filling up the recently added section with very little mainstream content of late. HBO Now seems to be quality over content (by and large) with less releases in any given month, but at least its stuff thats watchable and is kind of current. Netflix also seem good at recycling releases and then calling them new, with many older films "recently added", only they were recently added a year or 2 ago.

Disney+ will certainly interrupt things. Not sure what impact HBO Max will have when it comes out sometime next year. If Netflix lose Disney content to Disney + and WB content to HBO Max, it really leaves them as just an independent feeding on the scraps (by and large a victim of their own success and aspirations?)

I expect this is the recommendation engine prioritising those for you in that section for some reason. I noticed after watching a few Indian movies Netflix decided I was in the market.

They have Hulu for more mature content which they plan to bundle with Disney+ in the future.

I've not yet received an email indicating a price increase.

I logged in from work the other day to ask them why I hadn't received email but the Herald article was live, and the agent I was talking with simply couldn't answer my question... he noted I was coming in from Australia (work proxies through Australia) and _three times_ suggested that changing countries would change the way account notifications would work and that must be the problem.

So three times I explained that this isn't going to have anything to do with the way email notifications would work!!  And that i'd logged in for the first time via that method, just to chat with him.

Example from the transcript:

You

Will my rental be increasing from $14.99/mo to $16.99/mo as noted by the New Zealand Herald recently?

You

From december?

(agent) Netflix

Yes .

You

So why am I hearing about this in the media, instead of from Netflix directly?

(agent) Netflix

Yes , I will answer that .

(agent) Netflix

As your in different country now , So your medium of communication might face some issue to delivered in the alerts .

(and)

(agent) Netflix

As Netflix doest not support VPn or proxy so the we have oscillation in the country change so the alerts will not be in the right time and it cannot be delivered some time .

(agent) Netflix

“When you connect to our service through a VPN or proxy we are unable to confirm your location or what movies and shows we can play for you. We may block your ability to stream while you are connected through a VPN or proxy.”

*headdesk*

So after 40 minutes on chat (!) I finally was able to get the following information:

(agent) Netflix

The customer will be shown a message (as long as they are on a newer device) on all of their Netflix profiles, except Kids, on an upcoming billing date informing them that their price will change on their next billing date. In addition, they will receive an email with the same information. It is possible that if their account is shared that someone else who was streaming on the account may have seen the notification on a non-Kids profile and taken action.

Thing is...

- We use XBox via two main methods... Xbox One and Android devices. Neither have been presented with any message on any non-kid profile.
- No email has been received with the same information.

The conversation wound me up so much - when I asked to be referred to a supervisor it couldn't be done, and when I asked how to make a complaint I was told there was no method of doing so! - that i'm now seriously toying with cancelling my Netflix subscription.

This is the risk of big monolithic vendors who don't give-a-sh|t about front-line support :(  I'm very disappointed... the price change is a little thing. The absolutely piss-poor customer service, is much bigger. I didn't think that seeing when my account was notified via email of the planned changes (or confirming that it hadn't yet happened) would be such a difficult task...

PS: lesson learned, next time i'll not bother to try engaging their online chat when at work... way to burn a lunch break!
