I suppose technically they are not parallel imported, as they are being sold at a Mi Store (run by PB tech). They aren't (yet) a mainstream product though, and are unlikely to get any love from an NZ based streaming provider like Sky (FanPass, Neon) TVNZ, TV3, Spark (Lightbox or Spark Sport).

Things will probably work OK on them, but if you had an issue, asking for help from any of the above providers would likely get a 'Unsupported hardware, not our problem' response.

If you were recommending something to your less-tech-savvy relative/friend/neighbour, you'd be brave (and asking for tech support calls) recommending something not officially supported.

I know I will get asked by said relatives/friends/neighbours and I will be recommending officially supported devices (AppleTV hopefully, Chromecast).

And this is always the issue with any platform. And in all the years I've been doing media, I've never really seen more that 1 or 2 official solutions to the problem.

after reading this topici can see a large number of people who are not up to speed with all the latest technology, who dont want to outlay even more money just saying bugger it i will just watch it on the hour delay and be happy with that.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

There would be very few people using the latest technology ... only early adopters who are always a very small market. Is everyone driving a 2019 car? Most people buy only occasionally and when they have to.

i dont even mean the latest technology as such , to a large portion of rugby fans who want to watch the world cup when you say "casting to your TV " you have confused them.

FIH hockey blacksticks vs Australia should be on Spark Sport now.

Instead there are technical issues and it will be a 30 minute delay. No details on the Spark Sport website, not even listing the current live game.

It's bad enough that hockey didn't even qualify as a sport for beta testing (app rushed out for F1) but this delivery of a nz hosted game is appalling.

Would you leave a blank screen up for broadcasting if there were technical issues?

If it was F1 having a technical fail then Spark Sport will use Duke.
If it was RWC having a technical fail then Spark Sport will use Duke.

But Nz vs Australia hockey - not on Duke for Sparks back up.
Very very poor.

I thought that still being in Beta at the 6 week mark was a joke. But the debacle with the hockey highlights that this service is NOT market ready by any stretch.

Will Spark be blaming it's host broadcast partner? Or its platform provider? Or call it an Act of God?

As it is still in Beta then it's unconscionable to be charging full price for a service that is not ready.

If it is ready then Spark needs to take the Beta sign down and start refunding when there are issues.

Maybe @Chriskeall knows what's going on. Or maybe worried about the Spark CEO backlash if he publishes another negative piece about Spark Sport.

Don't laugh but I was told by a Spark Sport CSR when questioned around the Beta status that lots of services are charged for when in beta; I've never seen this apart from early access in which case you are getting a discount and not charged full retail and its also for one of purchases...

Sounds like Spark already has issued its CSR's with a patter to make excuses to angry beta trialists (cos it would be insulting to call us customers).

I imagine the patter will extend to no refunds during the RWC as it's the customers broadband /WiFi / device and not Sparks problem. Besides it's on Duke for free so you don't need a refund.

For hockey fans it's 4 more years of misery. How many issues or failures will it take for HockeyNZ to declare the contract needs to be revoked or remedies paid, I wonder?

To be fair even the Blacksticks knew that the quality was substandard, offering to live tweet the game until issues were resolved. That's pretty shoddy that a sports team has to rely on other methods to keep fans informed. The Facebook page is a rant-fest.

But lets be honest if you gave money knowing sparks track record you deserve to lose it, is it really any surprise Spark cannot even get basic stuff right?

All supposed to be core competencies for a telco. I've said it before and I say it again, these are core incompetencies for Spark.
