Hi Guys

We are aware of the issue and are running tests now, from what i can see netflix had an outage that effected android and ps3 clients, it has been reported on unblock-us as well and there are alot of reports on http://downdetector.com/status/netflix about the outage.  none the less we are checking our network to make sure its not an issue on our end.

Thanks
Jasonk

Really liking the Dynamic DNS feature - was my biggest gripe with Unblock US. DynDNS is built into my Mikrotik as a standard and works well with that address.

Keep up the good work! Also "enabled" my other flat and my parents in a matter of seconds (Mikrotik Cloud is handy!) - I would be happy to write some instructions for your site if you like to enable this service on a Mikrotik except I feel most people who have one know how to use it too ;)

This all sounds pretty good.  A couple of questions from a much less techie punter.

I currently use Unblock US, but only use their DNS settings on my Apple TV and Blu-ray player.  I've left the DNS settings on my router and PCs on auto, so that my local browsing etc doesn't go through Unblock US, but uses my ISP (Vodafone).  This all works well for Netflix etc, but occasionally I want the geo unblocking on the PC as well e.g. to go to Netflix account settings.

If I understand dns4me correctly, I could just change the DNS settings on my Router and leave everything else on auto.  It would then route the requests requiring geo unblocking to their server in the appropriate country.  All other requests  would just be resolved locally.  Is that pretty much how it works?  If so, how would the speed of the local browsing (Trademe, stuff etc) compare with just using my ISP's DNS server as I currently do?

Adding custom URLs for additional unblocking also sounds attractive for me, as I'd quite like to get round the newish blocking on hdtracks.com.  In this case, would it just be as simple as adding the URL for hdtracks in my custom list and then it should see me as a US based users?

I'd set the DNS settings manually in your router, using your Vodafone's ones (203.109.129.67 and 203.109.191.1). Although I doubt it makes a difference, since your router is probably already using Vodafone's DNS, I just don't like "auto" ;)

Not quite. If you change your router DNS settings to dns4me's, all your requests (from your PC, Applet TV and Blu-ray player) will be going through dns4me's DNS resolver. Geoblocking will work as it should in this scenario, yes. I doubt you'll notice any real world difference in speed, to be honest. To best separate out geo-uinblocked websites using dns4me and using your Vodafone's DNS, the best way is to use dns4me's host file generator and use the host file in your router (if your router has this feature). You can then use Vodafone's DNS settings in your router. This way, any requests from any of your devices to sites that need Geo-unblocking will be routed appropriately, using vodafone's DNS.

Similarly, it's quite straight forward to edit a PC's host file, if you want to maintain your exact current setup, but go with dns4me.

In short - yes - easy to use vodafone's DNS for everything and still have perfect geo-unblocking.

Yes.

Jason - one question I have is: are any user-specified custom domains reflected/implemented in the host file which the website generates, or would these need to be added manually to the host file? Or, would one need to use dn4me's DNS for these?

Yes any custom domain overrides you add will show in the hosts file generator, you just need to make sure you update your hosts file after making any changes or use the raw api URL and have your router pull it down after restarting.

Thanks

Thanks Sultanoswing.  I appreciate the time taken to excplain this to a novice.

So basically the hosts file resolves everything explicitly specified in it and then everything else goes to the ISP DNS server to be resolved there as usual.  Best of both worlds.  I'll definitely give this a crack.

I have a Netgrear router with Gargoyle running on it.  So I just need to find out how to edit the hosts file in Gargoyle, then sign up for dns4me and use their host file generator.

I don't completely understand how the US handshake server will tell Netflix to send replies back to me, rather than to itself - but I guess that will become apparent in the host file syntax generated by dns4me.

Hi Jason,

Was at the ninemsn site and all the TV catchup for channel 9 is over at http://www.jump-in.com.au/

Can this be added/updated to the system?

Jump in works, it under 9 down near the bottom of the services. It conflicts with a few other services, if you look in the services section of the user console any service highlighted in yellow conflicts with another, you can identify which services it conflicts with by mousing over the service logo.

Thanks
