For SmartTV clients, will you have to use the NZ version of Netflix or is it possible to use the US version?

I'm John Snow on this stuff.

n4: I disagree - one benefit I would expect is that the Netflix client will get enabled on my LG Smart TV (and other region locked brands). I don't anticipate any other changes to how and 'where' I watch Netflix.

The availability of the app and which account you use (NZ/USA) are two separate things. It will be the same app made available to the NZ region. The TV manufacturer is not going to write a different app for each region.

the Netflix smart TV app (in my case Samsung) is the same in every country they have Netflix

Yes, or to be more explicit, the app, the account and the region whose content you access are three different things. The app is the same globally but restricted by TV makers based on where they sell a particular model. Once you have the app you can use it to watch using any account or region. However you will need to use a DNS redirect like Unotelly to access different regions other than NZ. The account can be anywhere these days I think - they don't enforce US based credit cards anymore (in my experience) and at the end of the day its not going to make any difference if you sign up for an NZ account or a US account - the content you see is based on where you are (unless you use a DNS redirect as above).

EDIT: It might make a difference where the account is in terms of price of course. I will be keeping my US based account as long as its cheaper than a new NZ account.

From a content perspective that would be true, but its worth noting how much you pay for your account may differentiate depending on region.

But what makes you think that will be the situation in this case?

Netflix already has a proven track record across the world, and one that many of us in NZ make the most of. Given the maturity of its product it already has solved many of the problems that other VOD services here suffer from including:

* a lack of supported devices (TV apps, Android and iOS tablets/smart phones, Roku, ATV, Amazon Fire TV...)
* a polished user experience (has Lightbox sorted the problems of not remembering location within an episode and moving onto the next one? Of requiring the iPad's screen to be on when Airplaying?)
* a range of content (though this is always going to be the biggest issue here in NZ, it's still most likely going to be wider than anything else on offer)
* both movies and TV programmes (the reason why I'm not sold on the idea of taking up Lightbox)
* value for money (not guaranteed but likely given its scale)

I'm far from a Netflix apologist, but feel you're just not comparing apples with apples. Further, there seems to be general consensus that we'll still be able to access US (and other countries') Netflix, giving us the option to choose which we want to use...

Got asked this question but I don't know the answer. The answer might have something to do with where you are and ease to do so.

Does Netflix allow you to sign up for 1 month then cancel wait for a few months then sign up again for 1 month then cancel and so on etc. This is to only sign up to watch their own produced content for 2 months a year but not any other time.

Be also interesting to know if Lightbox would let you do this also?

Yes. You can cancel your subscription at any time and it will be usable until the next billing cycle. If you want to renew it you just sign back in an renew it again. I am not sure if the account is ever archived or what the period for this would be.

Always trying to "sponge" a little extra and often having absolutely nothing in this world to contribute in return. In the States, they do monitor a number of things to minimise what you suggest and I hope they do it here. NZ is too small to carry those that try to cut "cost corners".

Add to that there's ABSOLUTELY NOTHING wrong with signing up to a service for only the times you require it. If the service economics are predicated on continuous (or lengthy) subscriptions then (like mobile phone contracts) you'll get locked in and have to pay ETFs if you want to leave early.

If a service is offered on a casual basis and you're able to start / stop without penalty then it should be able to be used that way.

If I go overseas for a month I'm going to cancel my monthly parking fee with Wilsons. I don't see myself as a sponge.

Why? If he is only interested in a few seasons and watch these over the month there's no reason at to keep paying. You can do this on Netflix and Hulu - stop paying, stop watching. Start paying again, start watching again.

Your reaction is a bit over the top or you didn't understand what he wanted.

Why? If he is only interested in a few seasons and watch these over the month there's no reason at to keep paying. You can do this on Netflix and Hulu - stop paying, stop watching. Start paying again, start watching again.

Igloo works this way, and in fact Sky advertise the ability to pay for only the month(s) you want. Dont want next month, just dont pay and it reverts back to Freeview only. Then start again when/if you want.

I was asking because someone who mostly watches FTA TV and likes House of Cards was wondering how they can watch series 3 next year
