I've just checked with somebody and as confirmed in the other thread on here (and documentation provided by Spark Sport) they are definitely broadcasting at 60FPS.

Steve, sorry if this is a dumb question but how does that explain people reporting jitter at 60Hz on ATV and Chromecast but not at 50Hz.... surely 60Hz should be correct.

Simple answer is I don't know exactly.

I've been fishing for information after somebody who knows an awful lot about this started telling me a few things about the issues and device compatibility and is quite insistent that lots of the device issues we are seeing are a result of this 60 FPS feed.

I'd really just love to know why Spark Sport are converting a 50 FPS feed to 60 FPS to broadcast in a 50Hz PAL country. That makes no sense. If they were taking the native broadcast feed (which is 60FPS / 60Hz as it's from Japan) then it would make sense, but they're not. They're taking a feed ex TVNZ after local post production is done.

I heard that a week or so ago, I put it down to my ears instead. But it would not be hard to do that. Just don't do it in the boardroom!

Someone I have contact with, who seems to know a lot about video encoding and device compatibility and capability, suggested that if Spark were to drop Widevine Encryption from their feed, pretty much any device would be able to get 50/60FPS.

Even if they did this for the RWC as a short term solution.....

Maybe it's a result of the backlash they got during the beta phase, where they dropped the fps to whatever it was?

Then marketing/mgmt said LETS GO 60FPS THEN without thinking through what the actual source feed frame rates are.

There's nothing stopping the app development team from configuring the app to adjust the refresh rate to match the feed imo, provided the device is capable of adjusting the frame rate to match the content which most of them can anyway

JarrodM: @hio77 is the 1 hour delay version of the all blacks game tonight that’s listed on the app available free to view? (And is this the reason it’s not available in tvnz on demand?)

TVNZ On demand doesnt have online streaming rights to my understanding.

So it's purely the Duke viewing of it, otherwise you must watch through sparksport.

the one hour delay is new to me, I obviously haven't been keeping up with recent changes. VOD will be up sometime after that.

Yes, so basically if you sign up for a spark sport account, and don't enter your credit card, you then get the option you mentioned that it can be watched on a 1 hour delay.

The only really dumb thing (imho) is that if you click on Rugby World Cup 2019 at the top, you don't get the option for the 1 hr delayed feed, you need to scroll down on the front page and go to whats on in order to see the option for the 1hour delayed game.

I took a look at the 1 hour delayed "freemium" version via spark sport website. According to network inspector in Firefox it was 720p 30 fps not the full 1080 like other devices were getting.

Maximise the window and see if that sorts it.

Which reminds me, I've been meaning to ask a question.

With the RWC tournament pass, for what time period after the tournament finishes will we be able to keep watching the games?

I reckon he'd have to have a bet going with the other presenters that it's a box of beer (Heineken of course) every time someone says Sky Sport by mistake. It's worse that it's similar - if it was totally different it wouldn't be such an issue. 🀣

Its a crazy old thing this. Catching up F1 today. F1 apparently runs at 60fps but its all a tad confusing. However, i thought I'd do a test. My Old but awesome Panny plasma, paired with ATV4. ATV4 is set at 1080/50 so I set it at 1080/60 and it tells me its now switched the TV to 1080/60. Is there jitter? Not really, but its not smoooooth. Its not jittering, its not micro pausing, its just not butter smooth.  So popped it back to 1080/50, its BUTTER SMOOTH

Ill do the same on an OD RWC later today. And while the RWC has been a non event with too many minnows games I will watch AUS and ENG tonight, so will see how live goes at 50 and 60 as well as OD

Getting some frame rate drops and down sampling again during Aus game. Watched the All Blacks delayed  Thurs evening no problems... be interesting to see how the game goes tomorrow.
